I got the VSX as a Christmas gift and got the platinum bundle with all the room emulation. I’ve been mixing on yamaha HS8s in an untreated bedroom. I mainly make house, electronic based music. Any tips on different rooms or how best reference on these? Thank you an advanced and marry Christmas!

Ive had two pairs now, my best advise is these things are really good and have helped my mixes a bunch, but you still need to check speakers. i get some good equalization out of using them and checking against all the rooms, but i find my volume levels of each track arent always perfect until i do some A/Bing against my actual speakers. they are often close but once and a while im like damn, this is way off. it also may or may not go without saying, but always listen at a moderate volume, too loud and you are not going to get the results you want. if you find yourself nudging the master volume up and up over time wearing them, its better to just take a break. i also find it damn near impossible personally to figure out if my ears are a type 1 or 2, as anything i listen to to try to determine which one i am i just get used to the sound, so i stick to average. so unless its super obvious which one you are i would suggest using average. steven slate himself said most people would be average. and as far as a reference song, its not my fav song in the whole world (its ookaay i guess) is sledgehammer by peter gabriel. i use it as ive heard a bunch of big time mixers say its a perfectly mixed song. but thats just to get me in the right headspace, you should really reference songs you like that are in the genre you are working on, but i would err on the side of something you know is professionally mixed. references are a personal thing.

i would also like to add these things sound good as any decently priced headphones, and im not trying to say they are bad, but they dont beat headphones in their price range. but of course the magic is in the software, but ive heard better sounding headphones in my day, they just dont have the option to put me in the rooms and all that jazz.

Most of the people listening to what you love will be doing it on very sub-oriented systems I imagine, dance clubs, phone headphones, and streaming.

I do completely different music and use the 3x piccy's below as what I might call a "does it sound ok where people wouldn't listen to my music?" as a very last reference but never as a guide.
I use different rooms to the below, ones which match my own system quite closely.
If I was you which I am not, I would consider looking at the club Indey, ALL of the cars, the iPhone SA-pods, the Audiophile, Club, Boombox, HD-Linear headphones and if you want to master, possibly the Howie Weinberg Mastering studio. I get my Mastering done by someone who has no vested interest in my music, so I do not use it for that reason.

Can you do a pro mix on these? Absolutely. I still take them off to confirm and test on my secondary tinier midrange speakers, but definitely you can. Look online at who says they are good, and what they do and find people who are in the styles you love for info. They are the best for you, as sure as I check out engineers in the style I love. There are a few here like NoAvenger who really know their stuff in engineering if you have to ask someone on a forum, but a lot here have not done the decades of hard work, so reiterating, look up the style-centric engineers that match your music preferences.

Yes, for the music I'm trying to mix and master I am planning on using all the car simulations, the 2 club simulations and the airpod, iphone sims too. I listened to some of my own mix and masters and although Ive been getting better with the software I have and sound design in general, the VSX headphones really REALLY let me hear where my stuff is not translating well. It might sound Good on my monitors, and maybe a 6/10 on a phone or computer speakers along with a car test that isn't too great. With the VSX i can hear things in the simulations that I have actually heard when playing finished tracks on my phone or in a car. I find the most useful is the club settings since my whole plan is to try to get my tracks played by fellow DJs. Im really looking forward to what I will be able to do with these. Thanks for all the input! Cheers!

Yellow matter mids and Zuma Fars are great for the music you're making, and the new club (under yellow matter) in front setting. Bypass (HD neutral or something they call it) is also great for Sounddesign and production, that's my most used "room" currently.

My gamechanger was to map a simple midi controller for switching rooms. I have my favorite rooms, mono check and most importantly, a couple of gain matched references on s button so I don't need to open the plugins.

VSX is a gamechanger. It takes time to learn it like any monitoring, IMHO not all of my reference tracks sound great in all rooms but maybe that's just a matter of taste. In my experience at least, if you mix a track to sound great in your favorite room and use reference that also sounds great, it translate really well.

Edit: For my taste the rooms are too wet for production, for example small kick transients have a crazy reverb tail in the studios that's why I mostly linger in Neutral. How can you judge sailing in reverb with a reverb in top of your reverb? But great for making mixing decisions, levels and so on. The old club is really bad though, I think they mentioned on Gearspace that it's the measurement of an empty club, that's why it's so verby. Hard to get a club full of people to be perfectly silent for a measurement I guess.

What they have done with their software that comes with the matching headphones is capture the acoustics of the areas they are simulating.
I initially wondered if it was just another batch of IR's turned into an emulation but it isn't. However his developers did it, the rooms respond like a speaker system in the rooms. As fnord23 said above, a few of them were empty when the acoustics were captured so they seem like an IR when they aren't and capturing acoustics won't work in a room full of people when you are doing speakers-in-room-acoustics. They could of course do the same with a room full of people which would definitely change the density as the sound waves would hit a wall of custard both additive and subtractive, but that would defeat the purpose I think?

ADDITION: For me, the Archon and Sonoma give me a good environment. It's like any software with multiple options, you can't keep changing or you'll just keep changing. Each person I imagine settles on the room(s) that matches closest to the sound(s) they are looking for. Most people regularly settle on one or two settings, much like plugins, they have their 'go-to" rooms. What I found is if they sound ok in the other rooms and great in the two of choice and on my system without the cans, then it is right. Too many variables for it to sound perfect in every room in existence.

I agree they are great headphones but I have to ask, have you owned and tried the VSX by making this comment? I can only assume you have because I am sure you wouldn't make a comment like this based on prejudice, and you made your mind up by yourself, not some random Internet YouTuber.

P.S - I have HD 600 open back model as well and each of these serve a completely different function. Only one is versatile for room emulations, the HD 600 is fixed.

How does the VSX compare with Sonarworks SoundID Reference? The SoundID solution is cheaper and supports a much wider range of headphone + speakers and will allow one to use quality hardware that is proven effective in their own right.

the ATCs in the Archon room are my go-to. I never used other rooms because you will lose focus. I do use the CD player to match the music with the vocals. As a last step, I use the linear headphones to check if nothing sounds over the top. I finish listening to my speakers for a last check.

I've been really enjoying them. The room, studio, car, headphone and phone sims help me target problem areas and make better mixing and leveling choices. I've had a pair of Senheiser 650s and Aiaiai Ta2 Studio and as far as mixing concerned, these are fantastic. The studios "Feel" as though specific monitors are in front of you or the different club or car emulations. Pretty cool stuff. I scored mine for $150 so no complaints
