I just bought an E-Mu EMax on Ebay-kleinanzeigen for 50 euros. The condition is like brand new and it works 100%. Incl. about 100 disks! Actually, the seller wanted to give it away for free, but I told him to accept at least 50 euros.
It's unbelievable what people give away.

wow this looks amazing! hope you can put it to good use. Hmm i tried to find some vintage synths on ebay, but it was all very expensive. But maybe i searched for some good synths only?

Here in gemany we have also the little sister of ebay called ebay-kleinanzeigen. Its also a brand of Ebay...I already grabbed a lot of Hardware there for free...A Roland JV-80, a Technics WSA-1, now the E-Mu EMax, Novation Launchkey 25 MK2, NI Maschine I...and 2 Audio Interfaces, 3 Thorens Turntables etc. etc.
You realy have to be fast and if you ask friendly most of the people even send their stuff when you pay the transport.

I've kept an eye in that german eBay version as well and found a lot of cool stuff not found on eBay. I hope that when the time to pull the trigger on something comes the seller accepts to ship international :)

Its not the german ebay version. German ebay is ebay.de The site I meant is https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de . Simply take this link...its only music instruments and already sorted from lowest price upwards...so "for free" are the first 100 pages.
    https://www.ebay-kleinanzeigen.de/s-musikinstrumente/sortierung:preis/c74

There is also something similar in Austria called https://www.willhaben.at/ They also have a category "free give aways"

I know. That's why I said *that* german eBay version. It's not present on other countries as far as I'm aware.

Congratulations Lukehh on your new instrument.

In terms of price, the sampler was in the regions accessible to normal mortals at $ 2,990, the predecessor was much more expensive. There is also an expander version and several extensions such as the HD version with an integrated 20 MB (!) Hard disk and the SE version, which equipped the Emax with more synthesizer functions. The instrument was manufactured until 1989, sold well, especially in the USA, and was then replaced by the Emax II, which offered more functions (including stereo sampling, 16-bit converter). In the USA, the Emax was also marketed under the flag of the organ manufacturer Baldwin as the Baldwin IKE.

awesome historical piece and collectors item for an insane low price! great job

but I would flip it for money. put a stupid reverb.com style price on it and eventually someone will buy it. There is not much about the EMAX or EMAX II which have very "desirable" sound characteristics. Like how you often see Akai S900,S950, (especially) and S1000's sell for often quite a bit more than later models with more features, memory, etc. Not many buyers are chasing "that EMAX sound" even like they do with the Ensoniq units from the same time period.

I know...Even though its a normal EMax it can be updated to a SE with a simple software update. I'm just about to collect tools, Firmware etc. for it. I also plan to built an interface RS423 to USB. So I can load it via my PC. Maybe I will also change the original 3,5" disk drive with a Emulator so I can use SD-Cards and USB-Sticks instead of disks.

    Yes...100% working!

you should really consider selling it to a collector. it's going to become a dust collector after you use it a few times. they are so slow, and poor sounding convertors are not that difficult to emulate

stick a nice chunk of change into the bank account and get a loaded e6400 ultra or an E4XT and a SCSI2SD. way more useful E-MU samplers and way less $$$.

Some vintage hardware is only worth having simply to "have one", not that you would use it. This one is way up that list.
