Lovin' REAPER, been using it since v1. Always plenty of help on the forums at COCKOS. Big thumbs up to them.

Using Reaper a lot, and it's the one about CPU usage.
Customization is alright for me, there are a lot of different design. I cant see very well and it was easy to change all fonts to get it easy to read.
No crash here, even using a lot of vst(i)s
Just waiting for V5 to buy it.

(I'm on the PC side though.)

the ability to record both midi or direct audio just amazing .. but they still need to fix the metronome option :( we need to set all the time .. and the plugin windows sometimes annoys me too much .. anyway .. what can you say .. the most insane daw .. with insane price and insane features

Very interesting thread. Coming from Ableton, I recently started using Studio one and I thought it was way better in certain aspects while lacking in others.
All the advantages that you guys pointed out definitely make me want to try Reaper.

As a (pianist/composer/arranger) I started using REAPER a couple of years ago. After "futching" around with Cubase, FL Studio and a couple of others, I found REAPER to be my DAW of choice. Its GUI may be uglier than a one-eyed toad, but (for me) it's ease-of-use when trying to compose on-the-fly, is of par importance. I 'still' occasionally "kiss the other DAW's on the cheek", but I always "bed-down" with my favorite girl... uh DAW, REAPER!

  7. Since I have no laptop I was perusing the idea of installing Reaper on my daughter's Mac Book Pro and make her take it with us when we go away to our wohnwagon on the weekends so I have something to throw down an idea or two with.

Total Reaper fan, too (on Windows PC)!
I prefer it to Sequoia. For a near-ridiculous price, you get functions in the range of 1,000 USD software or above...
Customization (GUI, actions etc.) is top, functions are top. Sure, some things have to be "digged out" in searching and experimenting (although there's a pdf manual that is not bad, but far from being complete), and the GUI could be a bit more appealing (although I changed the standard GUI to older theme elements, Classic 4.x, which give a clearer survey, to my mind).
If you get used to all that, to me Reaper seems the best choice for a serious, professional audio workflow that exactly adapts to what you personally need.
Just think of a really capable Crossfade Editor (not that "garbled", rather useless function in Samplitude...): For classical music cutting, this is a "must have". Where do you get it, at all, and furthermore not to speak of: at this price? There are not too many competitors that offer it (among them the much more expensive Nuendo and Sequoia), and I clearly prefer its functions in Reaper over the way Sequoia implements it.

By the way, no VST induced crashing experiences here (Windows 7, now 8.1); but of course things also depend on which plugins are used...

REAPER all the way here. Used and trying most DAWs on the market, both professionally and at home, and now a total REAPER convert. Does exactly what it needs to do.

This is usually down to the plugins. I find it more with plugins that have copy protection that search when being scanned for the first time.

I dont use reaper. But i have had this problem with cubase on a few different pcs. Once there scanned they should be fine....

Same old "my Daw is better then your Daw" thread. the best DAW is the one that makes the most sense to the user. what ever works for what you do it the best DAW they all have there plus/Minus. REAPER works for you and thats great I've tried them all some i like some i love, I personally ended up spending my money on Cubase cause ITS THE BEST!!!! for me ;)

I don't use Reaper and never tried. I think that people have too many choice nowdays. Both old and new daws are really good, that's why Reaper it's not the number 1 daw. I wouldn't try Reaper not because it's a bad daw, but because i'm already happy with Studio One and second choice Logic Pro X.
Working ITB i need something really fast and easy to use, with nice GUI and quick options. That's why people still preferring FL Studio, Ableton live to this daw, because they fell like home.
Talking from a producer point of view, most of us don't like changing daws even if we know that some daws are better than others. We focus more on music than tools. Reaper needs more popularity to gain more users IMO.

A good reminder to at least try it, but also hooked to PT. The thing is, I heard Reaper doesn't have a wave editing function?
I cut audio to picture, so I really need that. Anyone experience with audio editing in Reaper?

Reaper is cool. But it lacks in the control surface department. No eucon, no flowers.
Editing functions are bar to none. I mean sample editor (yeah, start another program).
Yes its skinable , it looks cool. Great, yeah.
    Video is shit.
    Its a click nightmare.
Midi sucks. Most unintuitive MIDI department of all DAW.
Cubendo kills it with expression maps.
    Surround?
Basically all post related functions need 3 years of development.

But, I do refer all my clients to give it a go. And keep using Steinberg :)

So still no proper editing function. btw Eucon support for Reaper is in beta, surround seems possible already, yet a bit clunky..

The reasons for loving it or dissing Reaper are both understandable, but if a neophyte friend were to ask me which DAW he/she should start-out with, or an experienced friend wanted to switch to another DAW, Reaper would be high among my recommendations. For film scoring, it's not recommendable, but for recording, mixing and using samples, it's great. If I weren't essentially entrenched with Logic, I'd make Reaper my #1 DAW. Why? Logic's vexing "system overloads" interrupting my fun – it's too CPU-heavy. Reaper's light on CPU; there's not nearly as much "engineerinig" going into the GUI – which may somehow account for its GUI seeming unappealing to some people.

Reaper fan here too.. don't mind learning about it as i go. There is some stuff that is intuitive about it , and some stuff you have to dig for in the forums.

And that's another reason to like Reaper, that it has more of a community feel of users, that can actively help others, and contribute to it's development. It's not pretty, but I never found any daw to just look nice as is.. maybe logic or cubase,of which I use neither regularly. Just feel like I can get under the hood and tinker with Reaper more easily, and it just does what
    I need it to do.

Have had some crashes with vsts, but most of them were user enhanced demos if you know what I mean, and saw that as the likely source for the bugginess.

Big Reaper fan!! As far as attracting new users, Try it if you like, use Groove 3 tutorials. But frankly the reason they are not that worried about new users or over charging is because the creator is very wealthy. He developed Winamp and sold it to microsoft many years ago. He is obsessed with making it the best out there, that's why so many updates, he uses the software. Also no copy protection what a wonderful business model. Love the portable install. Put your DAW and all your tracks on your memory stick and take it with you, use it anywhere. Genius!

Generic multichannel up to 64ch was possible since few years ago.

If you IGNORE the builtin stuff for surround and use the 5.1 panner http://jsplugins.supermaailma.net/jsplugins.php
    [IMG]

and http://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?p=1541506#post1541506 (i wrote these JSFX, if you want more, PM me), and use FX Pin IO routing, it's very nice. You can get things done very quickly with a few tricks.

I mix in 6-10ch regularly and have done over ~50 surround projects since ~2012
