    Good Morning!

I started to share my music over the web, and would like to protect sensible compositions. How can i watermark or fingerprint my audio? Is there a form i can do it manually? or should i use a software? But i can't afford now an expensive software. Is there over the net a freebie or a free service for that?

I thank you very much for your help!

Record your voice over it saying something, like "Global Underground promotional copy"

You have to put that snippet of your words all over your record, so that some smartass wouldn't cut it out and make his own record from yours.

    Yeah or use these quotes:

    At the beginning
“I got your WHOLE fuckin' spiel down. I've got your background check – fuck what you owe on your fuckin' shit; I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU NOW, MOTHERFUCKER!”††

    In the break down
"You told me your name last night!"

    At the end
"You're gonna meet me here soon: I'm coming from Kansas City, and I'm gonna fuckin' kill ya, you got it?"

No I mean there are ways to get your tracks watermarked so that sound-cloud and you-tube recognize your track as being yours,
just look into some external publisher for sound-cloud, but for heavens sake, skip beatstars

The easiest is to produce a video of your track going through the production process showing how you made the track. Upload it to youtube. From then on it has a date stamp.

The only way to protect your track is to not ever put it on the internet. That said, you want people to hear your music (obviously). The only people that will ever steal a song from you is the person that would never be able to pay you for it in the first place. The people within the music industry will never steal your music because it's really not worth it to them. They have access to a million pieces of music and certainly don't "need" yours or mine. They've been doing just fine without it. I have 700 (or so) tracks that are currently published and making me money from film,tv, advertising, multi-media, etc. There are also and handful of my "solo album" tracks that are being used without permission on You Tube. I registered them with SoundExchange (US composers only I believe) and now You Tube has recognized my tracks and I'm getting paid for those uses. Win-win...

IF I ever had to go to court over the rights to my music... well, I have all the proof I need. Right inside my computers and hard-drives. I have all the original project files that are time-stamped and signed by the computer as proof that I'm the creator. No one else will have that. And everything is backed up on 2 drives and a cloud server.
I fear nothing and no one...

So... it sounds like you're a beginner because beginners always think they have music that everybody wants to steal. Truth is, you don't... as painful as that may sound. Like I said before... the music world has been doing just fine without your music (or mine!).
You're a creative, so go create. Share it with the world! If you are meant to be "discovered", then the internet is your friend and it will happen.

About watermarks... they don't work. Just look at the piracy taking place...

    Not exactly watermarking but...

Ive used this in the past... http://bananasplitter.software.informer.com/ one can merge two files into one.
So if you say merge a jpg with an mp3 (with output of mp3 chosen) the mp3 will play as normal...
...Or you could choose the output as jpg and the mp3 would remain merged and hidden until you spit into two files again using your encryption password. I've used in the past and was able to find out who was leaking our music from the promo rls prior to official release date. That did however require unique versions to be created for each person who was sent the promo's but it worked ;)

Don't get me wrong I totally see the benefit of artists music being released as an mp3 on the scene... (and for that matter softwarez)
But it's a bit of a kick in the teeth when it happens prior to the due release date, moreover there is also potential to effect compilation licensing etc. which at the time (late 90's) was our bread and butter.

Of course this doesn't stop the track being re-recorded as a work around, fortunately they were foolish, just renamed and released the exact file they uploaded from our FTP and their allocated promo directory.

Another option maybe to open your *.wav in notepad and add some text and resave as *.wav again... think Deepzone!

Anyway not quite what you were asking for, but hope it helps you or someone out somehow :)

thanks for your advice. There are very useful information inside your comment. Thank you again! But i have a word to "piracy". That doesn't bother me, what matters to me is that some lazy composers take some of my ideas.. maybe it has more to do with copyrights than with watermarking an audio file, but i've thought it could be a way to protect my work.

generate text or pictures into sound how JMJarre made in his latest "Electronica" albums (digits in highest frequency spectrum part - "Exit (feat. Edward Snowden)", pictures and codes in track with The Orb), Aphex Twin did this. It can be seen in sonograms (RX, Audition, spectralayers pro etc). find this on youtube, harmless or harmor by image-line do this! there is tutorial how to make it with that IL synth.

Make your unique sample, and past it into tracks (experimental+creative+signature)

Morse code with text - usually sine...put it into 18-19 kHz range or a bit higher up to 20kHz, make it very loud (will be seen in sonograms and nothing of mp3 will compress these loud frequencies)! not all will hear this. Experimental

    White/Pink noise (short) - noticeable

Record your vox - couple of words ----noticeable too

My method is much more unique, I'll never share this. It can't be heard/seen on sonograms, no metadata etc. Only one thing of this signature marking I can tell about is my dithering method manually made with ToneBooster dither. Other things are more unique and can't be shared. It is experimental technology "engineered" personally by me, and only me can prove that "It is only my material". I do not marking sound by making innoticeable sounds etc. Artifacts etc.

I bet you didn't bought your software or sample libs or stuff to produce your music. But you want to make money with stolen software, and try to watermark your music.

    I won't support that.
