Spitfire made a small documentary on getting "that sound" of John Bonham's kit on "When The Levee Breaks". Their library is called The Grange, as it was recorded at Headley Grange. They went back to the house/stairwell where the drums were recorded.
But it's mostly about the Ludwig kit, how you play it, how you tune it, the room/stairwell and the tape echo.
Edit: That "bouncing snare" is mostly due to the synced tape echo (8th-note) slapback.

Maybe he wants to actually know how it was recorded and mixed.

    :rofl:Lol! Just kiddddding!!
Edit: But seriously though, as a drummer myself (from an early age) I also went through the Bonham phase and put filtered delay on my drums. It still works.

Yes. And a pair of Beyerdynamic M160 in the stairwell. Supposedly.

Didn't know it was a "custom" drumkit, I was trying many ludwig libraries and no success, the grange sounds exactly the same, thanks a lot

@Baxter Could you tell me how can I put that filtered delay to get that effect on the snare/kit?

    Best Answer

Start simple. Make a parallel FX chain and insert a simple delay there. Send the dry snare and send/mix in the drum room into it as well (mix them to taste). Set the delay to a single slapback 8th-note delay, all wet.
You can color the delay with filters/EQ and tape saturation/compression (either before the delay or after it).You can try to roll-off some lows as well as some highs (hat, cymbals, etc). The thing with the Levee Breaks sound is that the kick is in there as well. Experiment. Have fun!

Edit: there are ofc delays that comes with all sorts of emulations and built-in madness, like ValhallaDelay, u-he ColourCopy, etc. But I figured it's great (for learning) to start simple with just "simple delay->tape emulation->EQ/filter"(or any order you want), so that you can sculpt it any way you want.

A lot of sample(r) stuff. No or a little delay, but 2 or 3 Reverb units (plate/room), one with 1/8 pre delay.

to recreate, there are so many drum libraries and fx plugins, Valhalla verbs, Altiverb (the L 480), Eventide ...
There is 'heavy' compression on this snare (slow attack, fast release).

    Good luck!

I mean the kick also has delay/echo.
