How to get this bass tone?

    As buttery as it gets. Does it come from the instrument? The playing? But there has to be something else. Any ideas on how to reverse engineer it?

    It is Bunny Brunel on fretless electric bass, as you said. All the playing on this one is top shelf.

    If you can't get your hands on a fretless or fretless player, you can get the tone (without the glissandos/slides) with a Fender jazz bass.

    The sound comes from all of it. Groovy fingerstyle playing and timing (difficult, if possible, to get that tone with a pick)- playing near the bridge for the throaty sound- Fender Fretless Jazz Bass with the tone backed up a little - some very light compression- into a clean sounding amp with very slight bass and treble boost to EQ (or even DI can work).
