Using the vsts I hear in the sounds I like is a good way to choose my sounds?

 

I think choosing a sound you like is a good way to start, but from there you'll probably need to choose sounds that goes well along your previous sound choices, in a way everything is working together. Since it's a complex subject I think there's no easy answer since there's no right or wrong, but I hope this little tip helps get you started.

 

Test as many synthesizers as you can and take your time and listen to as many as you can, eventually the sound you like will crystallize and you will know what you like and what you don't like.
