Blocking your daw's executable file and sometimes plugins exe (not necessary) should help. Initially, gudakick and fabfilter gave me error, after blocking fl studio.exe in firewall it never happened again. Usually plugin dll's by themselves do not connect to internet without any exe's. That's why the only time they call is when you run them through daw or by their own exe (say standalone of NI Massive.exe). Also go to task manager and check for the plugin updaters and disable them so they don't launch automatically.

Couldn't agree more wholeheartedly my friend. My DAW is never connected to the internet, period. Best solution in my mind. but I know alot of people have dual roles for their DAW PC. I do not. It is strictly Music only.

Right. But, as you mentioned, for many, it may not be feasible to have multiple computers.

Not sure if this discussion is supposed to be Windows-centric, but on Mac, Little Snitch works well in keeping plug-ins connecting with the i'net. Disconnecting from the i'net is advisable, anyway, unless one is using a cloud server of some sort, or a music-collaboration service such as Audiocommon.

On any osx you can configure multiple networking profiles, eg. auto, static ip, lan only, off ... there you set up the proxies and dns to suit the role, "lan only" here is for example a config with misconfigured dns entries where only static adresses work (so not really LAN only ^^) but kinda

thanks for all the education guys, I learn a lot here.
its not the best way by any means but I have a different one to add (like in addition to some of the correct ways noted here...) the latch plastic accidentally broke off my connector plug. reaching over and popping it out of the router is pretty easy. its actually quicker than opening a window and clicking some settings too

How about you just work offline??!!
My studio has no internet connected, music production computers... can't anyway since I run LAN based VEP5 on slave computers. Other computers in the studio (are free of music software and) are connected to the internet for client-based services with Team Viewer... and receive data transfer from my production computers as needed...

Even if you blow up your router etc. some plugs will do a bypass through the browser (simplified!) and other stuff.. so it's not like complete solution. Of course you will not see any page, but it is at least - annoying. It can be solved in a minute but I will stop here /w my 2c.. otherwise I'll get shot by at least 2 members... :knock:

yeah I was thinking about it some days ago, but for drivers, not for services.

I found that to disable a driver (the same thing that can be done in Device Manager), I need a Windows ADK (or SDK) package, called DevCon. does anyone know if it is possible to do that without installing all that Windows AKD/SDK/else shit?

I don't know of any way to disable devices with a .bat without the Device Console.

You could create a batch file for "ipconfig /release" which would effectively disable internet connectivity.
Then another one for "ipconfig /renew" which would reconnect.

Use Notepad and enter the following for RELEASE:

    echo off
    cls
    ipconfig /release
    exit

Use Notepad and enter the following for RENEW:

    echo off
    cls
    ipconfig /renew
    ipconfig /registerdns
    exit

Save-As ALL FILE TYPES and add .bat extension

Now just launch the release.bat to disconnect and the renew.bat to reconnect

This is effective for Waves users too as it doesn't disable the network card, which would give you the "No Valid License Found" message.

    For your convenience.

thank you Pinkman. the problem is that I actually need to disable the driver/device, because of ISR/DPC issues (I'd like to disable some problematic drivers whenever I have to go live with my laptop; but I'd like to do this by one click, instead of going to Device Manager and manually disabling). disabling the internet doesn't really help me completely, but it is a beginning.

the other problem is, I read around the web that DevCon is a bit hard to use :bleh:

How about just installing the Windows Driver Kit? (WDK)
I found that Virtual Clone Drive and Native Instruments devices like Komplete 6 and Maschine all package DevCon with their drivers.

Identifying the device is probably the hardest part and it's really not that hard. You can do it.

It's only the adapter that needs to be active not so much the connection.
