So I have this file, everything's okay except for a drum snare that is only present in only ONE channel. It's periodic and stands out from the rest of the mix. I tried to attenuate it with Fabfilter EQ spectrum grab function but for the life of me I couldn't determine the exact frequency it's coming from.

Then I tried RX de-click module, since its periodic and at regular interval, I thought maybe this RX module can detect and remove it but it detects everything except for click. Ha!

Would any kind soul help me determine the frequency of this snare so that I can notch it down ? or maybe some other method ?

Any help will greatly appreciated.

 

You don't always know which approach to fixing something will work until you try. Without making the file downloadable, you are going to get guesses.

I'd like to see what the Sonnox Oxford Drum Gate leveler is capable of fixing with something on only one side.

You should be able to isolate it in Ripx Daw

 

I looked at the sister site but couldn't find Sonnox plugin. Purchasing a plugin for just this track is too much of ask.

 

Download RipX Daw from sister site and isolate the snare. Then you can do with it as you please.

 

Oh, of course. I wanted to check myself. It has an "unmatching transients" detection, but that hit is maybe too hard to left Side anyway. The RipX DAW won't run on my Mac or I would like to test that, too. The option I landed on using Fabfilter, since you have those already, was to set the project BPM to 83 to match the track tempo. Added a Midi file with quarter notes on the 2s and the 4s, loaded a channel unlinked Fabfilter Pro-MB band on the left side and external sidechained it to the Midi notes to just smash its range down a tiny bit.

 

Isolate elements and "remix" it. Or use dual mono dynamic EQ and find the clack-frequency in the percussion and do a quick reduction on the left side.
Edit: one can wonder why someone put it loud af on the left side, and not in the center.

Seriously. Maybe using a mono-maker like Sonalksis Stereo Tool or bx_stereomaker, etc. up a little higher than normal might tuck it back in more center where it could not need as much attenuation.

 

You say it grabs everything BUt the snare? Do that then reverse phase with the original signal which will cancel everything but the snare. Now take that snare and reverse it's phase and it should cancel out the snare in the original track...in theory!

 

Okay, I've separated the drum stem, still figuring out how to single out that snare to eliminate it.

 

if you don't want to manually cut it one by one, or find a clean hit to use as inverted phase for removal one by one,
then use something like Fabfilter Pro MB for a (fake) sidechain compression where every snare hit (source spectrum) causes (whole or just snare frequency range of) drum track gated (and just play with attack/release) - in a very similar manner like most people use kick drum as source for compressing bass in a mix

 

Try TDR Arbiter or the Ozone EQ on drums mode. Maybe try both.

Edit: don't forget to try Arbiter in wideband mode as well.

Edit 2: tried to tame it, but still haven't found a way to do it without messing up the stereo image. It seems the bulk of the snare is around 2khz.

I attenuated the HF part of the spectrum with Pro-Q and chose to put the band on the left channel. This is the best result I have among all the tips provided. Others would just come out wrong or destroy the sound image. This one is alright, that snare is tamed to the point that it doesn't stand out from the rest of the mix and it's acceptable now.
