a VPN should not be able to intercept your SSL connection to the website
(there are edge cases that would allow for MITM to occur, but they'd rely on you having installed certificates & you'd be able to see those in the chain of the certificate when you connect to sites)
especially for popular VPNs like tunnelbear you should have no worries

 

I don't think VPN makes this somehow less secure. If you contact the right server (store) from your browser (https, hence SSL, TLS). There is just another tunnel around.

Also, where I live, and most EU countries that I know, require some kind of 2FA (like confirming the transaction with your phone bank app) for CC transactions, by law.

 

I'd worry more about whether the website is legit, than your VPN.
Paypal even with their crappy politics and customer service, is a safe way to "use" your credit card without the merchant having access to your card data. I mostly use it wherever possible if I have to buy on the web.

if its somewhere you have to use your credit card, watch your activity for a couple days after. If they steal your card info a small charge
followed by a large charge usually occurs. The small to test the card is still active, the large to enrich the bandits.
