How not to become deaf by sudden bursts of loudness?

There are some modulation & amps I use that are not most optimized (let's just say that)...When changing settings, they sometimes glitch & then comes sudden 10-20db boost in volume. No ringing yet, I've been lucky (heard some folks were not as lucky as me). Is a limiter enough. Just placing it on the master track. [t. ableton]

What's some precautions to not go deaf in such a dumb way?

You are talking about software or hardware? If its hardware then get it fixed, if its software then wait for i to get fixed... I can only imagine the disscomfort if would give me if something would randomly blast 20db of "something".. sounds unusable anyway

I'm talking about plugins & in the daw stuff. I just want to know what to place and where, so that it stops these sudden bursts. I'm guessing a limiter is what I'm wanting (best bet that default live 12 limiter will do the job). Anyway I'd like to know what the best thing (that I myself can do) -- I've got ozone limiter, Pro-L2, PA limiters, dozen more limiters & all kind of stuff.

Which is great for such that it doesn't affect the sound quality?

    I can't, it's better sound-wise than other stuff I've got.

why would you not put a limiter for protection on the master? especially if you're doing sound design or playing with high resonance etc.
i always do that. if it's a single plugin that does this, fix it/remove it/etc.
i don't think it matters at all as long as it's an instant brickwall

That's what I'm asking. Is there any difference between the default live 12 limiter or these fancy limiter plugins. I am not going for loudness, just want not to go deaf. What's the limit 0db or -1db?

Magnesium Glycinate or L-Threonate used acutely WITHIN the 24 hour window of the exposure to the loud sound can prevent the cascade of oxidative damage in the inner ear that takes place. if you take it days after though it's not going to do much to prevent the potential cell death or recruit progenitor cells, but magnesium is a good bet for preventing excitotoxicity from glutamate over the long haul to at least not hasten the breakdown. once you've exposed yourself to loud sounds too often though, there's just a bunch of transcriptions going on that are very difficult to next to impossible to shutoff. best to just avoid em when you can, and wear earplugs when outdoors

    I use
    https://vladgsound.wordpress.com/plugins/limiter6/
    ENV skin
I use "Protection" section in this situation (ISP fast).

I was using Ice9, but it is buggy.

Most important factor is being INSTANT/brickwall like.
Because a single short burst can be damaging.

And setting the threshold UNDER 0 dbfs ... because if not, there is no point.

But does placing the limiter in the master fix the problem? You would have to have a threshold high enough to not interfere with your mix in an unwanted way therefore the burst still could be uncomfortably loud. I would put the limiter in the insert oft the plugin itself and set it just above the level of the patch you're using. And yes, stock limiter is just fine.

That's highly interesting, may I ask where that information is from or what study undermines the benefit of magnesium for the inner ear?

there's been a few studies on magnesium and acute noise exposure done by various armies since soldiers are regularly exposed to loud and sudden sounds. all of them single out Threonate, but i am not sure it matters that much what the magnesium is bound or chelated to if it has relatively decent absorption (chloride, glycinate, threonate, malate)

There's tonnes of rodent studies too on acute noise exposure and various things that prevent the oxidative stress cascade that is mostly responsible for kickstarting the shitstorm that is hearing damage/NIHL. curcuminoids, NAC,Glutathione. mostly all anti-oxidants or things with anti-oxidant qualities, but again. there is only evidence for them preventing cytokine storms and oxidative stress in the scenario of damage from acute exposure to loud noises. they will have some function over the longterm, but they probably cannot scavenge all the ROS if we are talking somewhere further down the timeline(at least no studies suggest that anyways)they are just too embedded at that point

REAPER has an in-built protection against such bursts.

How are you listening? headphones or speakers? if you are using speakers you should be able to buy a hardware limiter or compressor to sit between the source (your computer) and the speakers. Headphones you could do the same. - but you're gonna have to bypass it when you do your final mix, or you won't know you have problems....

I personally can't listen to youtube with headphones, the volume levels are never normalized and the shittier the channel the louder the intro music, regardless of content I can't sit through that shit. I have a remote with a mute button next to the computer its my safety switch for this shit.

you could consider adding something like this as a safety switch.
    https://www.amazon.com/Vaydeer-Mult...keywords=usb+audio+knob&qid=1718802875&sr=8-3

many other brands and models are available. I have not personally tried this thing. its like 30$, cheaper than an ear transplant and then your glasses won't fit right and with some of the shitty doctors they might actually sew one of them on backwards, course it would help you hear people sneaking up on you......................

Don't bother with standard limiters. It's a waste of resources and can lead to a false sense of security.

For protection purposes you want one of these on your output bus..

That's interesting as my experience is different. Ice9 is in my template and I've used it in every single project I've worked on for at least the last 5 years. I've never had a single issue with it. How have you found it to be buggy?

    I couldn't "reset" it when triggered ...
Too bad, because it is VERY effective and simple

PS : tried it again ... it worked
May be my DAW was buggy
