honestly i came here for the discussion about how many mixes people go through before mastering. the actual topic does not interest me nearly as much.

    on topic :)
i usually end up with more "final final mix 10 absolute final mix" tracks than i would like. maybe 10 on average. i think this might be high :)

Of a single track? TBH, I don't even know how to count this. How many hours? Days? Saves? How often I do think I've got the final version?
Really, I don't understand the question.

i normally do 2-3 mixes. sometimes the 1st mix is perfect.
i'll normally have the mix i prefer then the mix the artist or label prefers and i'll blend them together before it gets sent to a mastering house

for your culture, back in the day mastering process was there , to transfer to the commercial format( vynil , cd ) and during the process we use tools to better fit into the limitations of the new format.. when i said now in 2020 i talk about the audio format .who record in tapes now ? we stay in numeric format from the start to the end ..so what is mastering now ? no need to tell us your feeling about algo its off topic here

so if you agree what is called today mastering is in fact pre mastering , the process where we use the tools is no longer used to change format but still to be able to listen in a maximum of system ..and now in 2020 to fit streaming plateform loudness regulation ..

I assumed the title meant how many saves. So how many times you think its ready then change your mind :)

How often I save a song? sometimes I save every minute, sometimes every 15 minutes, maybe 30 if I'm stupid so, 200?
Depends on the time. Could go up to more than 1000.
Or do you mean different names? Like v1.023B4? That's way less, round about 10.

    This
is something different and depends heavily if it's a job or for fun.
For job 3 - 4, for fun more than 100? No seriously for fun probably 10 - 20.

I assumed it to mean finished mix saves. So you think its mixed and ready for mastering but then change your mind.
I think you answered that in the second part though

I hope for @korte1975 that this is a joke.
If someone uses such settings in "mastering", there is something fundamentally wrong with the production and/or the mix...

Well, these settings could've worked for a certain track, but as a general guide line?

Mastering is what a professional mastering engineer does for you. Unlike you, he must never have heard the song(s) before so that he can have a fresh set of ears. Obviously, he is also very accomplished at what he does and has top-notch gear etc. (his monitors are probably worth more than a hundred grand)

But no matter how expensive his gear is, the most important aspect is that the mastering engineer must have a fresh set of ears. That's what mastering is: Getting your music enhanced by a professional who had never heard it before. It's like feedback from someone who is qualified at both giving feedbacks and making corrections. So when I say you can't master your own music, that's not because I have a problem with self-accomplishment. If the best mastering engineer in the world worked with you through out the whole production & mixing process, then no, he cannot master your music either.
