Robbie, you told me that you know theory, assuming that you can use your material (DAW, VSt etc..) you can do it.
The first time it is all about jumping in the pool and survive and what ever preparation you do, the first time it will be like this, and the next too.
As an example, If you listen to a local radio, listen to their own jingles, criticize them, and do your own for them, but impose yourself a timing, like 5 days max for 10 jingles. then go sell them to this radio. It is just one example of how you can do something concrete. There are more. Like take an advertising, take off the sound, do the music, same with a movie/game trailer. But always put yourself a time limit.

My advice would be to do both, plus everything else you can think of. You never know in advance which step is gonna connect to something else. Like when I joined a band I had absolutely no idea it would later lead to composing for some TV shows and ads.
So try everything cause anything can turn out to be a first step into the business, and it may very well be something you never even planned.

And about confidence, that's something you just gotta have in this work. So if you feel insecure you probably need to practice more before you're ready. But nobody knows if they're any good until they've given something a serious try. So again - in the beginning it's always a bit scary and you have to take some chances.

In my -short- experience this could be my advices:

    About people involved
At first, it´s hard to sell your music, and sometimes people don´t 'see' how much effort it took to you when you produced it. It´s nice to have some previous recordings as a background, it helps a lot, but -in my experience- people prefer to be working simultaneously and create something for the project. So you should listen a lot of different music and be ready to take different paths in order to reach what they want but can´t express.

    About money
There´s a lot of people out there with a camera and good taste, and they´re starting and trying new things as you are. Maybe there´s no money here yet, but sometimes these are the most fun and 'educational' projects. I worked for free with photographers, illustrators, animators, video producers, VJs... and the experience is a must later, when the paid projects come up. It´s not the same to create music for a photo gallery, or a 2 min experimental short film, or a 10 seconds cartoon animation, and it´s nice to develop a certain flexibility for working by working with people who is learning and loving what they´re doing just as you, and not chasing some money. At the end you get better pieces to show as your portfolio. It´s always better to show video+your music than just your music isolated. In that way you can set your creative decitions and base your aesthetic taste in front of a potential client.

    About time
BE READY :wow: In some projects I had to develop original music in just one or two days. So you find yourself writing, editing, mixing and adding sfx at the same time. Sometimes somebody wants to 'change something in the video' during the process (a few minutes before the deadline) and all your perfectly synced work goes to hell. Chaos. And you ALWAYS will have the feeling that you could be better with a more extended deadline. Don´t worry, it happens and it´s part of the 'magic'

I'm really glad man. And by the way remember that on this site if you are posting media always leave out the s in https or it won't appear as a widget. Concerning being lost I can tell you that you're not alone in that. I also struggle because I haven't put in as much time as many of the other members here like frito who has been making music for about 15 years or light59 who is a classically trained pianist travelling the world now. You think you have it hard...at least you took music theory. I've been learning everything on my own and would have given anything to take a college music course. You know what I did? I knew one of my friends was taking it in college so I patiently waited until he was done with his semester and hounded him about borrowing his textbook and I would have to travel far just to pick it up. He would constantly need it back so I would be in a rush to get all I could out of it until I had to return the book and then I'd wait for him to lend it to me again. I locked myself in my apartment for days at a time consuming all the knowledge I could find from wherever I could find it, practicing until I wanted to hang myself on ancient equipment and a 6 year old computer. The amount of things required of the musician are staggering for beginners: you have to learn how to play (muscle memory), music theory, composition, arrangement, synthesis, mixing, mastering and so many other areas. Just commit to doing your part and remember that these things take time. Here I put a little something together for you:

    Something to remember:
Beethoven handled the violin awkwardly and preferred playing his own compositions instead of improving his technique. His teacher called him "hopeless as a composer." And, of course, you know that he wrote five of his greatest symphonies while completely deaf.

Albert Einstein did not speak until he was 4-years-old and did not read until he was 7. His parents thought he was "sub-normal," and one of his teachers described him as "mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in foolish dreams." He was expelled from school and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School. He did eventually learn to speak and read. Even to do a little math.

Stravinsky was run out of town by an enraged audience and critics after the first performance of the Rite of Spring. Later in life, he observed that "I have learned throughout my life as a composer chiefly through my mistakes and pursuits of false assumptions, not by my exposure to founts of wisdom and knowledge."

The first time Jerry Seinfeld walked on-stage at a comedy club as a professional comic, he looked out at the audience, froze, and forgot the English language. He stumbled through "a minute-and a half" of material and was jeered offstage. He returned the following night and closed his set to wild applause.

Never a problem mate, thank you so much for the kind words. I'm always looking for ways that we can expand your world here. Once SAiNT is done with the new Audioz we will be upgrading things here as well which will bring a lot of new bells and whistles. Before all that though I'm already working on a genre specific framework and that will be in place shortly. I certainly think it's long overdue and we have a lovely Industrial production thread already so now that can be expanded on too. :break:

That Stravinsky quote is spot on. Too many ppl are afraid of failing and being lost a while, instead of just seeing those things as necessary steps on the way to getting better. Without the struggle, any kind of success we achieve wouldn't taste so sweet.

I should maybe add that I had been learning and playing music for over 10 years before I got lucky with those TV jobs I got. Until then I was only making peanuts from sporadic gigs with the band. And I learned the basics about producing cause I had bought a portable multitrack recorder, and spent a lot of time during a couple of years recording and mixing demos for every local band, mostly for free.
My mom thought I would be lost forever back in those days

It's always a pleasure frito, it would be a CRIME for your excellent music not to be encouraged. I have no doubt in my mind that you're going to make it man, you're already there...you just don't know it yet. One day you'll look back at this conversation and you'll remember your struggles and victory will taste all the sweeter. And by the way you're ready for film/video game scoring and you should look into that immediately. I think any person in their right mind would hire you and be getting an amazing bargain because you don't even know how good you are. *yes* :mates:

Absolutely I've always looked at it as a rite of passage. I know all too well how frustrating and stressful it can be but perseverance is the key and in the end you're doing what you love whether you're amazing or not and that's all that really matters. My advice to people is roll up your sleeves and condition yourself to get excited about failing miserably because the difference between you and that artist you admire is he's done it a hell of a lot more than you have. I don't think I've ever learned a thing from being happy and successful in something but those moments when I didn't measure up to my standards is where I forged my destiny.

I still do this , late work was for a young 3D animator, a 5mn story, I done it for free, his work was not perfect, but I had fun and new fresh situation.

Frito Zanzibar I became fan of your Art (Not only your music), please feel free to PM me for news.

Catalyst Perseverance is the key This is the most important thing.

In the image you posted Catalyst, every thing is true, but one of the best and practical is: Put yourself on a dead line so every week you will finish one story.
For my own compos, I can't do every week, but every month anyway is a good rhythm.

Nice! I would like to watch it.
I´m now waiting for a friend who is working hard in a new animation, it seems that I´m going to be in charge of all the noises :dancing:

Taking different projects put yourself in places and responsabilities you never imagined. Once I ended making a video for a contest without any experience with a camera. It was really a GREAT experience and now I understand a little more about that world and I´m learning and digging into it in my free time.

This is the result of that experience, we received nice reviews: http://genero.tv/watch-video/32336/

Now, I´m working in some sort of EP with one of the guys who I worked with that time, and it´s sounding promising.

You will not because the young director think it is a shit (he is not far to be right) and don't want to show it

I worked on it without the final rendering, and when it comes to it, it was ugly. But any way, for me it was an interesting composing experience, and for this guy, too.
He surely do the next better.
