Better than give you my own advice, I'd let talk a big pro: look at this (be careful they have an ugly very loud sound logo at the beginning, so turn down the volume first)

For some reason I am not able to get this video inserted here... :dunno:

One Question i do have is. If you find yourself kinda drained on a song. do you think its ok to start another one and come back later or does that usually lead to over all failure?

Olymoon I took care of that video problem you were having.

Also for YouTube videos there is no need to use the media tag only for SoundCloud widgets.

I am sure that the solution is different for each one of us, even for each situation, song, day.

But what I use to try in these cases, is apply what my teacher told me: Music is 10% of inspiration 90% of transpiration so I work harder.
Concretely, I try 2 directions, one is to think about the global structure, see if maybe I am stuck because the piece needs some break or change.
By working on the global structure, I try to write where the changes should happen, even approximately, it is a kind of timing the piece.
So that way I know better how the ideas must evolve to go in the structure.

The other "trick" I use, if I am stuck on the harmonic path, is to do a theoretical analysis of the present ideas: in what scale are they, which chords / scales do they have in common, and where could I go from there. (For example look to the minors and major relatives of the scales/chords used)
Of course this usually give results that may sounds a bit topic but form there you have a starting point to continue.

If you didn't study harmony, you can find the chord wheel (Also called Circle of 5ths) , which is a great help.

Thank you Catalyst for fixing the video you are so efficient !!! Do you sleep sometimes? :wow:

Yeah Olymoon you could also modulate to other unrelated keys for example if you are in C minor you could modulate to G minor. Better to move a fifth up or a fourth down in key so most notes are still related to your original scale. Then you return back to the original key in your next section.

No problem, glad to do it and no I don't sleep much. After finishing the rounds and e-mailing SAiNT and Parcell the sun is coming up...yet again. :wow:

good points. my problem right now seems to be structure over all i think the harmonic content would come out alot quicker if i knew what direction to take the song in
i have the peak of the song laid out in basic form so i know i want it to eventually end up there, my issue is that im trying to make a "sad" emotional song. which should be easy but im also trying to give it this..."overcome" feel too. so its all very emotional and i want to display it right.

far as the circle of 5ths goes i took college music theory in high school two years in a row :headbang:

To answer better your first question:
I try not to start another song, because if I do it before I have all the ideas and structure (even if the arrangement is not done), it is likely that I would not finish this one.

What you have clear is the concept, which is the most important thing.

Now , may be you should think about, when you want to introduce the different shades and impressions/feelings.

I don't know what music you write/listen to but I'm very diverse in my interests. If you get stuck and just want some good musical inspiration I suggest you check out my Transmissions series. We have 3 threads at the moment: Alternative and related genres, Electronic and related genres and Industrial and related genres and you'll find artists that you might never hear. I will shortly also be adding Classical and Jazz.

This is from our Industrial thread and the track was actually created as a score for a video game:
