How do I record a vst's sequencer midi output in Studio One?

Never had to do this until I started fooling around with vst's that have cool sequencers included.....I have a vst drum instrument w/ it's own sequencer and I'd like to record it's midi output. Recording it's audio output is no problem but I can't seem to find the answer for how to record the midi output. I guess I'd need to route the midi back into the original midi track somehow? But I'm very unfamiliar with Studio One so struggling.

That depends primarily on the drum vsti, imho.

From (some?) synths, for instance, you can't export the arpeggiator's notes.

Oh okay, no wonder I'm struggling. :D I am using two drum vst's... XLN XO and Geist. Thanks for the reply back!

Also in Geist2 in file menu in "Save Others" you can choose to save pattern as midi.

  7. As a general rule of thumb, your drum machines are Instruments which much reside on an instrument track. To record any MIDI an instrument generates, you must create another Instrument track, and in the track inspector, select the original Instrument (the drum machine) as the input source for the new track. This additional track can be armed for record, and will capture the Instrument's output MIDI when you next record.

True, if the instrument is able to output midi information, which is not always the case.

  9. True, but the OP's original question presumes an instrument outputting MIDI. :bleh:

Well, it's not the same to export MIDI than to output it real-time.

The confusion in here is because the principle is being overlooked, or perhaps unknown to some: MIDI in/out is not "sound".

This is the only time ive had to record midi so I hope this helps.

    Add Your instrument
    Add Blank instrument track
Expand the blank instrument track to show all info.
Connect the Blank instruments track to the Instruments thru midi in
Press Record and Monitor on Instrument track
and Record only on Blank track.

With scaler and kontakt. The blank audio track records Scalers midi output.
Really hope this helps. come back if not. Well figure this out together maaan! 4stepp.png

Thanks all! For XO, I can export (like mentioned above). For Geist though, I was able to send MIDI data to another track, which makes things a little more convenient when wanting to save (or send) the MIDI patterns for other drum kits or synths in real time.

Earlier, I was trying to get XO to do this and all I was getting were my MIDI controllers as input and nothing else. So that was confusing when I was expecting XO to show up in my input chooser (screenshot attached to first post).

Anyways, thanks to everyone for helping out...looks like I'm good now. Really enjoying Studio One's workflow!
