In the intro of these two songs, what instrument is being used for the bass or is it being synthesized? If synthesized can anyone point me to a tutorial or if it's an instrument, are there any libraries that have it?

    Forgive my noobness.

I'd put my money on a Yamaha DX7 for that sound. One of the presets actually sounds very close to that . . . can't remember which. Stupidly sold my DX7 years ago. If you can get ahold of the factory patches from the DX7 in sysex format and load them into Dexed (if they don't come with it already), you should be able to get very close. I keep meaning to check out Dexed. Good luck!

Nightshift is one of my all-time favourite songs.

EDIT: Surprise! . . Still have my DX7 support files on the hard drive - here are the factory patches which you can load into Dexed.

You got me curious so I installed Dexed and loaded the DX7 presets into it, started futzing with preset 15 - Bass 1. I had something close and should have rendered then but I kept playing with it and ended up somewhere else. I lost the nice, round attack and it got a little too metallic on me . . . I've been listening to too much Front 242 lately. :P

Nevertheless, a nice sound to start with. Threw a basic delay on, a bit of 80's style (Valhalla Vintage) verb, and some chorus.

    DX7 Bass1 Messing About

If you're into these sorts of bass sounds do some research on the classic Yamaha DX sounds of the 80's. Lately Bass from the DX11/TX81z was another very popular bass sound back then. You'll probably also enjoy some Casio CZ style bass sounds as well.

after much player around, the DX7 preset Bass 2 with a bit of tweaks was almost perfect! i just have no clue how they processed it from there. i'm guessing tons of compression, eq and reverb! I edited the preset in Sytrus, Thanks for your help man!

I'm very impressed with Dexed. Not only does it sound good, but also the layout of the interface makes learning FM programming much easier.

i heard about dexed, weird how i consider it better then fm8. Perhaps not as easy to use as Operator or tweakable like Sytrus but still a great free synth. Especially with those presets

Take My Breath Away was one of the sexiest songs back in the day. First time I heard it I was too young to know what sexy was, but it stirred something deep within me. There was just something about it. Either that or I might have just had some gas.

Harold Faltermeyer also gave us the beloved Axel F. Also known as the theme to Beverly Hills Cop.
