In essence, you need to treat them like you would treat human kids. With kindness, patience and acknowledgement.
Never asked myself how to train my cats specific things, and honestly don't even see it as acceptable. But I can always find common ground with them and ask them to do things I genuinely need. I have five cats as of now, and even with the newly adopted feral one, asking (sometimes repeatedly, but still), establishing by own boundaries and respecting theirs work.

I used little bits of chicken liver to train my cat to change a flat tire on my bicycle when I hurt my back. That turned out really well. Now I'm working with good Liiddle Puddytat to learn how to clean his litter box all by himself. If I can do that I'll make a video on hyutube to share the glory and get like 2 billion views! I too, tried to teach my cat to use the toilet. All she learned was to take the roll of toilet paper to her litter box and tear it up while pooping. God, I miss my lil Nadia.

Anyway, cats can be trained. You need the right breed, exceptional patience and consistency, and it helps to try to get them to do things that are at least somewhat consistent with their instinctive behaviour. But it's doable.

Oh, and they have to like you.
