Hello guys, im newbie to mixing
I wonder how i can mix my low, gravelly voice like tyler the creator
I found out that tyler has quite low and gravelly voice (maybe because of distortion)
and want to mix my voice like him
i never smoke, but my voice is a little raspy because of rhinitis, so sounds like i gave distortion

    My mixing was like this
I first use Autotune a little, use waves deEsser, compress with waves Cla-2a, then eq two times and unmask with Nectar, parallel compress a little one more time with Gem comp76. lastly give saturation with Mcdsp Ac202 and Softube Saturation knob. I give little reverb and delay with default setting of Ableton.
but my result is not good and not matching with the beat

I hope you guys can help me with the mixing

    this is my voice

    1. an audio example would've been nice.
    2. I just had a listen to Puppet and can't hear what you mentionend (a bit raspy, but low?).
    3. it's less about which tools you use but how you use them. And this needs of course a diffent approach for every vocalist.
    4. an example of your voice would also be helpful.

What kind of mic are you using? I have a deep raspy type voice as well and I just recently tried out the TLM 102. I didn't like how it captured my voice so I went with the SM7B with a Cloudlifter and this works perfect for capturing the low and mid detail I was looking for.

No, no, sufficient means it should be able to do the job. It's just that you can get a better sound out of it with a better performance.

I think you need to work more on performance before anything , dont underestimate the importance of a good take before you even start to mix

This is the illusion created by the 'magic' of production!
Distortion gives you the impression that his voice was so low etc that it was too much for the channel!
Or that somebody doesn't know how to set up the input gain on a vocal pre or channel!
But then when you say this, it would imply you might be saying that they have compensated for his big voice by EQing it thinner?

Either way, my point is that I don't think we can always tell what a person's acoustic voice is like from a recording.
But maybe I just misunderstood you too. lol.
