What's the capacity of your HDD with samples? If you have more than one, what's the total capacity?

    Because he can

Seriously, samples are great to play along with to generate new ideas, and then ditch the sample track. You can quickly find yourself somewhere you never expected to be

i had about 750 gigs of great stuff on a 1 TB drive, but then about a year ago the dang hard drive DIED ON ME!!!

all that great stuff was lost forever! tv shows, movies as well...

as for the samples issue, I like the "little bit" kits that offer the individual sounds to create your own beats, i think it is creative to be able to make a song out of the tiny parts !!

nowadays my main system is more than 16gb of a selected lib (2ssd and 12 hdd with 4 raid sets), obviouly half of that is for backup. 99% of my Kontakt librarie is compressed. I really cant tell how much I downloaded, tested and deleted. Today have a lot of shit libraries and I spend a long time testing, deleting, organizing, backuping. Its just impossible to test all and many of the libraries and some are waiting for test because you have to be really open to delete a library, sometime only when you need a specific librarie and test in real world you discover that you must delete a half of them. I dont like loops, but they represent a lot of information that you can rewrite in your music, but today is becaming more cut and paste than ever, and probrably in the near future the newcomers will not belive that i had studied 10 hours a day for 10 years because some machine does it for you.
How many of us tested all the presets of the tiny FM8, a lot of things are boring, but when Howard Scarr do presets for Zebra I could be shure that is better build yourself that search and glue a Frankstein. In the pop world the composition is not an intrincated thing like academic composition, but almost all of the pop have something that you can recreate joining pre-contructed blocs. Create is the way, but sometimes the world do not care or diferenciate, THE EAR IS DYING!

  8. As a habit I generally refine down and organise everything I download. Quickly finding good samples and presets is far easier that way.

My core (refined down) sample library covering all types of sample is around 80gb. As its always being added to I regularly back up it up onto another drive. Then I have another 1.5tb which is the original libraries on another drive, but that's rarely accessed. I also have around 250gb of Kontakt libraries.

Roughly 700GB, basically Komplete, Spitfire LABS, Alchemy, old sample CDs, Live's built-ins. Other plugin factory libraries, of course. Some sound ripped off Youtube and whatnot.

Not counting my own recordings (location sound, guitar and bass shit, misc stuff).

    Solid necropost
Since op is still here I'd love to know how their hd requirements have changed in 12 years... a few Tbs is nothing now.

I dream a day when you can online stream Kontakt library from personal cloud and it has a mechanism that only download and delete all the files required upon opening and closing the project in DAW, you wont feel a thing or any stupid loading time, just the usual 2-3 sec. With 100Mil mbit/sec internet at that of course. I stored my Kontakt lib on gigabit LAN NAS though. Works fine just a little slower from having it in internal HD, didnt really feel the slow anyway. 16TB.

I think I batch resave everything. Also I commit to stuff fast. I dont like too much VSTi running at the same time during composing/production. Learn the hard way, so gotta minimize the risk.

This options take a bite on loading times.
Hope the dreams come true, and loads faster! But while use the tricks.

I found it loads faster when you open a project with a kontakt library, instead of opening a new instance of kontakt on a new project.

Sometimes I think we're addicted to downloading stuff because most of it never gets used anyways.
