SpyFX does the Presonus Eris connect straight to my laptop? The wire needed comes with the monitors i guess? From what i understand i connect them to the headphone input of my laptop? I don't see any other way they would connect

Thepirate: I was considering USB...but i don't have many options from Amazon.co.uk . I seen some Alesis ones..

Try to get the best monitors you can buy. Don't chose a monitor over another simply because it will be easier to connect. Monitors are an essential part of music production. Connections can be made with adapter cables to fit any configuration inputs of your monitors.

I think the real question is, how serious are you? How cheap are you? Do you see yourself ever using a dedicated, acoustically treated room in future? Do you live in an apartment with unavoidable noises around you and can't isolate from it? Do you see yourself doing serious mix/master work, or do you want to focus on writing/producing and are fine with outsourcing mastering to professionals?

Cheap monitor speaker pairs (3-4 inches) will cost around $100 USD. You can get by without an audio interface (If it has RCA input, any TRS to RCA cable will do), but these speakers usually aren't truly flat and have high harmonic distortion. And depending how good your laptop is, it may increase the noise floor and add interference significantly.

Good monitors (5+ inches) can cost anywhere from $470-$800 USD for two (3-4x more costly than cheapos), because you buy them individually. You must think of it like a 10 year investment. They each have their own power plug, and you will want to use a real USB interface with them with balanced XLR cables, and of course, you will want a quiet and treated room. Also I would highly recommend using surge protectors (if that is not obvious already).

Regarding the audio interface, you may want it for these reasons:

    - Cleaner audio (Laptop output often has noise, interference)
    - Stronger signal (Speakers may require a slightly stronger signal than most laptops provide - similar to driving headphones)
    - Balanced input (Some monitors sound better with or require XLR cables, and you need an interface for this)
