mate @tulamide, you are way more experienced than me in any field that concerns music, i'm not doubting you or anything :)
is there a quality loss, you say. the point is: how do you discern a song that has 80 quality from a song that has 50 quality? is such a thing even possible? can i measure the quality of my songs? if yes, how?

i do agree with you on all your points about the business, etc.

    You're doing the same, bro.

I believe in 1% posh elites more than 99% bourgeoisies or blue-collar underclasses. This pop culture alongside social one are the staple crops of the meditation and ideation of this 99%. In the past, this 99% didn't have much muscle even to influence the music world but now they can corrupt anything or at least lead you and me astray.

And again you ask the right questions! I really like where this is going

I think it is safe to say that nobody could differentiate in percentage values. Not only would it request a 100% perfect song that all others are tested against, but also there is no way to measure the taste of people. With quality I refer to those points that were proven: The loss of timbre and the increase of aggressive marketing. The last point convinced me the most in the video. If a song is just playing all day long, wherever you go, and you can't escape it ("heavy rotation"), it is more than likely that you sell more copies of it than of songs that are not marketed so strongly. And the more copies are sold the higher your chart ranking, which in return makes you a hit song. Nobody can honestly say if she likes the song just because it exists or because of marketing strategy, group dynamics and the like. At that point it becomes obvious that you can make any song a hit song, if you invest enough money to push it into the charts. And I think, that is happening on a daily basis, while in other times Songs where (not in general, but way more often) going into the charts, because people really liked the song.
An example for marketing pushing songs into the charts in previous times would be "Don't you (forget about me)", which was featured in the movie "The breakfast club", a beloved movie of the youth of that time. I doubt that this song would have become so successful without the movie. Those who liked it, were remembering scenes from the film, not enjoying the craftmanship of the band or the singer (I personally think that it is one of the worst live-singers in pop music). So, it is not a new phenomenon, but it was extremely cultivated lately.

You can't discern values on something as subjective as music. For the simple fact that each listener's perception is different. That's kind of the whole point of expression. It isn't a contest. If you can induce emotional responses from your audience. You've succeeded as an artist. Some random guy on the internet, who feels your work doesn't meet his standards is totally irrelevant to that fact.

There's a fun fact about normal listeners:
If a critic thinks a movie or a song is a bomb (bad production), they'll find it a smash hit or vice versa.

So let's keep quiet or praise to get your intended result.:hillbilly:

yes @tulamide, you make the right points as well.

but let me ask something: do you think casual listeners, i don't know like a mom who turns on the radio while she's doing house chores, really cares about what's all behind this? they just want to hear some catchy stupid tunes that will be forgotten in a month. i highly doubt most people want to know or have time to know. or while in the car: they just turn the radio on and enjoy a quick pop tune. nothing wrong with that.

is there more business behind than there was before? i don't know as i'm not as old as you, but i can certainly tell there's A LOT of business everywhere and everything that is "pop", not only music.

since when do we care about the "success" of a song? that is not a metrum of judgement for the so called "quality".

are those BAD THINGS, we have to ask?
or are just the results of an evolution and an ever changing industry/art? (those two words put together sound really horrible!)

    edit-
ok i tried watching the video and i just can't lol i'm sorry

What I primarily crave in dance music is the crooner's ̶f̶e̶e̶l̶s̶ serious reflection about a tough political and social issues. And also in my plumbing. I seek disciplined, unflinching political analysis in my plumbing, while (alas!) finding today's plumbing shallow, vapid, and pedantic. To be painfully direct,

I know what you mean. Of course you're right. But still, you know the history of acid in UK? In the 80s unlicenced raves were criminalised, defined by "repetitive beats", the soundsystems could be (and were) confiscated, convoys of over 5 cars could be disrupted, land was subject to police public order issues etc. That's a big part of what drove the sound systems onto mainland Europe, and even off to Goa. The law is still in place - so yes, even dancing your tits off in a field can be a crime. (!)

More generally, imagine there is a criminal regime in power: those people directly opposing the regime would undoubtedly be acting 'politically'. Therefore, not to act in opposition is also 'political' - it's a form of endorsement - silence gives consent. Even rejecting politics and political action is political. In Huxley's Brave New World folks took soma and danced to machine-made music.....it was 'political' by its absence of political/social content....it was a diversion.....almost absent of meaning. It kept people 'happy' and prevented them from getting uppity? Huxley put it in the book for good reason.

Not that it matters especially. I'm not criticising, I just find it interesting. One doesn't have to act consciously politically to be 'political', and one can't avoid it anyway. So...... dance on! ;)

Yeah, same here, really. I hate being hectored by songs that are preachy. And one of the things I love in dance music is the escapism, the absence of regular 'meaning', the lack of any overt political or social themes. Nobody whining about how shit everything is. haha. Or telling me I have to go and help the homeless, whatever. Phil Collins - this is aimed at you, you cunt.

Presumably your attitude to music, dancing and whatever does reflect something of your wider values and lifestyle? You might be a "live and let live" kinda person; or someone that thinks they have little influence and don't want any; or someone that doesn't believe in traditional political structures; or whatever. I suspect if you look into it you will undoubtedly find some connection between your lifestyle, beliefs, actions and what could loosely be called 'politics'. [drugs, contraception, hierarchy, authority, gender, sexual preference, noise pollution (!), property rights, fire control, rubbish/garbage disposal, individual responsibility, energy supply, access to water, food.....all things that would feature during a night in the woods listening to dush-dush-dush-dush?]

Horses for courses, innit? I get tired of nothing but "woo let's have good time!" just as I hate "Let's be serious!" all the time. Each to their own.

My favourite stuff is 90s dance music, as it takes me back to the woods, the Es, the tsunami of new sounds and style, the guuuurls........the fire.......the escape......and the sense of a new, much better world emerging. All gone now, of course......

The hairs on the back of my neck go up when I hear this, remembering how it sounded back then. Amazing. Still sounds great, but not like it did back then.

very nice post g spot uhm string
if you put it that way, then yes, i guess almost anything is political? as you can see though, we are heading into a different direction than the topic's start. don't really have much anything to add anyway :)

Too bad. But I liked our discussion, because it was civil and on an equal footing. Others prefer to get sarcastic and flee in insults instead of arguing. So here's a thank you from heart.

Pop music today missing that lyrical oomph. Nothing like Billy Joel & etc. Only overall mixing depth and colors sounds good to me. Example like Closer, i enjoy its instrumental more than the full song :dunno:

    You guys feel? :like:

This video is so much horse shit it is unbelievable. It is a video that a student would make when first learning musical theory and discovering different genres use the same musical system.

Timbral variety = Quality of music?
Harmonic variety = Quality of music?
    Loudness = Quality of music?
Lyrical variety = Quality of music?

    No.

    Timbral variety = Timbral variety
    Harmonic variety = Harmonic variety
    Loudness = Dynamics
Lyrical variety = Largely depends on its subject

If timbral variety is important to you, listen to these kind of songs.
If harmonic variety is important to you, don't listen to solo artists.
If a dynamic mix is important to you, listen to pre-millenial songs.
If you need lyrics about politics, listen to Bob Dylan.

There are so many great pop songs, each with their own amazing qualities to love. There is no such thing as one big quality, only the different characters (which some or measurable and some not) that define your personal taste.

pop music is adjusted to brain level.
ppl are just worse and worse.
read some texts written by average adults citizens from the 60's. And do the same nowadays... instant headache.

Last time i checked IQ in my country (France), i had almost an heart attack.
I don't even speak about culture... because there is nothing to check.
    And you know what ?
Those same millennials are going to vote, because now they are 18 years old...

    Where is my gun ?
