I use a few different daws depending on the task at hand. I wasn't aware there was a competition going on.

 

every major daw is above the competition in some areas

in the area you mentioned all suck tbh,
and there's a reason: midi sucks and we are stuck there with crappy controllers and ancient protocols

 

They already had something above competition, the IPS interactive phrase synthesizer, it was an amazing tool, unique at the time, even now it would be very special, but then they removed it. So I'm not sure they want to be above competition.

 

Cubase has already grown above the competition — it's called Studio One, which was created by Steinberg developers who got tired and left because of how narrow-minded the company had become.

 

Studio one is a great piece of software. I've owned it from release and it's been on an ever upwards curve, starting out from a solid start point.
I could own any daw I want, but I only own the one I like best. Doesn't mean my choice is superior to any body else, but PS have done a great job, and narrow minded is a silly, petty argumentative throw away comment which holds no real merit. Great price, regular free updates and no stupid fucking dongle or bullshit protection - So dopes like you can use the crack and still trash it

I'm old, ancient in fact. I've used them all from day one and pro 24, and way back then I couldn't have ever dreamt of owning a better daw for my needs.

Don't like it? I don't care. Get of my fucking lawn

 

Steinberg is fucked now, the new version are the worst daw ever maded.
Just buy nuendo 5.5 witch is cubase 5 with elastique algorythm.
I would love to move to studio one, but i can't produce on it the same level as i produce in cubase. Cubase is basic, doesn't have any shit. Is a piece of shit software, but i love my music on it. Maybe we don't need anything. Mozart made all his shit with paper and pencil.

don't forget to mention Studio One X http://studioonex.narechk.net/index_en.html without it working with MIDI (and chords) are quite PITA in S1 compared with Cubase
