Band, without 's'? Then it's of course THE Heavy Metal band, even if some might say it's...

    Maths.. :headbang:

(I don't know if it qualifies for Straight Metal, but still..
Interestingly enough if you add a little more groove and bluesy/jazzy/funkyness it will get closer to Greg Howe,
which I always loved but that's surely not Metal..)

(the only other Metal bands I like are Manowar, Malmsteen, Borislav Mitic..
and ofc Iron Maiden and Dream Theater but I haven't had the time/moment to explore them much, and they have massive discographies..
It happens to me a little bit like Zappa, or Pat Metheny, their discographies are so Massive I don't know where to start,
plus for things like Zappa I like to put all my attention, read the lyrics and so on..)

Well Progressive Metal is a type of Metal isn't it?

For me what defines it as Metal is mainly the guitar Tone, the type of distortion and also playing style,
and ofc I guess also the Production of the whole thing, specially the Drums and so on..

It's certainly more crude/raw than other more produced bands, but it's still sounds like Metal to me..

I think you have to scroll up to the shirt I posted to understand which Heavy Metal they are referring to. The type that came out around Thrash in the 80s.

Yeah I understand what you mean, but..

Not going too far, Dream Theater has some aspects of Progressive Metal in it too,
or Malmsteen is like Neoclassical Metal, not straightforward HM like Maiden or Manowar,
but still close enough so it wasn't a problem/discussed..

Maybe Spastik Ink focus more on odd/complex time signatures, but dude.. it's Metal :headbang:
(to my sinful virgin ears anyway.. lol)

Malmsteen is definitely considered Heavy Metal and respected like King Diamond and the other greats listed here which helped pave the way to all the great shit we're all blessed to have today. Dream Theatre too, they are 80s so they belong.

I think they want hair metal from the 70s-80s. I actually can't wait to get drunk next time and have a go at this thread myself because it was my entryway into metal so I've a ton of respect for it.

One little aspect I always found interesting of Iron Maiden is that they use Single Coil pickups and Strats,
yet they are some of the original bands that defined/created the style..

Ofc it must be beefed up SDuncan pickups, surely not vintage or tex-mex style, (and a lot of EQ and Marshall? Amps..)
but I always found interesting that they kept on with it, instead of switching to Humbuckers in the 80's-90's like everyone else..

Malsmteem also uses them ofc, but it fits with his melodic/playing style a lot,
as being more bright and dynamic they resemble more a Violin..
