I understand why he came crying back to the hardstyle during defqon.1 ;) But it sounds like an sutter edit type of effect.

 

I think theres also some triangle or sine being modulated. The lead is very bright and kinda... metallish...

 

It's serum, perhaps one saw oscillator with unison and a white noise source. An lfo is modulating the oscilaltor(s) volumes mainly. (same lfo can be mapped to other parameters for fun). The "secret" is automating the lfo rate (synced to tempo) and changing values on each chord.

The plate reverb in serum followed by OTT compressor also included in serum makes that sound.

 

Yeah, some tremolo'ed (tri/sine LFO on amplitude/volume) stacked and slightly unisoned saws. Modulate the rate and the amount/range of the LFO. It also has some pitch automations and/or portamento/glide. It's more like a preferece of which sound you want.
The "clean sound" that you are referring to might just be a highpass on the whole sound (to make room for the bass). You can also add some noise oscillator, if that's your thing.
