    Hi Guys,

Just to start things off I want to let you know that I figured out how to get live to show video on my windows 7 desktop. This issue I am having is that I can not get it to show video on my windows 8.1 laptop. I downloaded the recommended Codecs (fddshow & Haali Media Splitter), yet I can not get video to play. I can hear the sound of the film, and a black box pops up for the video, the only problem is that there is no video.

I saw somewhere that running Live as administrator would sometimes clear this up. However when I load live as admin I cant even drag a video file into my project. Yes thats right, Under administrator I can not load the same video I was able to load when I was not using live under administrator. This whole debacle has me very frustrated as only being able to work from my desktop at home is super limiting.

I do not usually post questions asking for help as I always feel like I am causing someone to go out of their way for me and I feel bad. I figure the AudioSex and AudioZ community has for the most part been very helpful and welcoming to others so I figure that I will give this question a shot here. Thank you for any help any of you guys are able to provide.

PS. The video I am trying to work with has been converted to MP4. If there is another video file that would be more suitable for live please let me know...Maybe this is the issue?

I'm not too sure about it, but it may be because Live doesn't support MP4 at all (a week ago, I downloaded a youtube video and I had to use VLC to open it since Live didn't let me import it). Try AVI or other formats

I think you have to update Quicktime in order to have videos play correctly in Live.

Video playback in Live does not work or is glitchy on Windows 7

    Live Versions: 8 - 9 (32-bit)
    Operating System: WIN 7

The latest Quicktime updates ( 7.7.2 and 7.7.3 ) are not fully compatible with Windows 7, which results in the video playback being glitchy or not working at all in Live and other applications.

Please install Quicktime 7.7.1 to fix the issue.

Thank you so much for your help. I have just installed directx and I am now installing Cuda. You were spot on with my video card being Nvidia. I hope this is the fix. I will post an update as soon as it is available. Thanks again for your help Studio!

Thank you for the response. I actually have it working fine on windows 7, my issue is with windows 8. If studio's solution does not work I will attempt to rollback my quicktime install to 7.7.1 to see if that fixes my issue. Again thanks for the response!

Alright guys I have a bit of an update,

I have tried to install Cuda and installed direct X as well as installing fddshow & Haali Media Splitter with no results. Again When I import the .mov file to session view the black video box pops up and I can hear the audio play but there is simply no video. I read somewhere that the 32 bit version works in windows 8 so I am going to give that a try. If this works however I will be limiting my version of live to only be able to use 4 gigs of ram vs the 16 gigs of ram a x64 bit version of the program could do.

I am going to go ahead and give this a try but I am very skeptical. I feel like if I am going to be doing scoring and audio-work for film I am going to need to be working on a platform more stable than Live at the moment. I was leaning towards adobe premier coupled with audition. Does anyone here have any advice on what they prefer to use in this situation? It is a shame to Abletons limitations force me to switch DAW's as Ableton is really all I know and feel comfortable with. Maybe this push will help me expand my horizons and become a better version of myself....

Enough with the philosophy, I will let you all know how the 32 bit version of live 9.9.1 works.... Does anyone think 9.2 will have added support for video or will I most likely have to wait till live 10?

Alright guys I found the fix/workaround

I hope that this information will help someone with this problem...

I uninstalled my 64 bit version of Live and then installed the 32 bit version and boom, the video opens and plays. This looks like a compatibility issue on Ableton's part, nothing more, nothing less. I however was not too thrilled that I had to use a 32 bit version even if I was not needing video, so what I did was installed the 64 bit version so that I could use both interchangeably.

Again, I hope that all of my troubleshooting will help someone somewhere save time if they run into this issue. If anyone is able to figure out a fix to enable video playback using x64 bit version of live on windows 8 please let me know. Thank to all that has checked this thread out and those who have offered advice. :break:
