I have made very similar chains, but have not found the solution to what sounds like his mid-highs being smooth rather than telephonic, as there is obviously a very heavy cut around 200-400kHz (the artist's voice is baritone when speaking)

Can anyone give me a hand in identifying what may be used or the technique being used to achieve that particular sound? I have a chain that practically identical, the issue being not enough 'air'/smoothing of mids.

Please refrain from turning this thread into a flame war regarding the current state of music and how things will, or may never be the same again.

Very smart individuals on this website who have provided me with solutions I would have not thought of otherwise.

Edit: I realize this may be the artist's delivery as well. In certain songs it sounds as if he is not using his nose to breathe in and out - reducing breathiness in the recording. But that seems... different.

Could you post an example with the chain you're currently working with applied, so we have a reference point? A dry version would be productive, too...

On both of those vocal tracks, there is a stutter type effect. It is very similar to, if not; the Repeater in Logic Remix FX plugin. If that is the case, it probably has Logic Phat FX on it too. They are under Multi-Effects, and you can see the Camel Audio fingerprints all over them.

There are a lot of plugins which claim to do airy-ness. But in this type of production, I would expect it to be something like Knockturnal by DJ Swivel, or something "like that". Think Youtube Marketing.

I also think it is maybe noteworthy; the vocalist is using the same plugin chain but working with 2 different producers. You can hear some little bits of autotune when it isn't overdone. I'd bet a dollar it's a modified preset in whatever plugin it is.

Production in this more niche genre generally refers to the individuals solely producing the instrumental used. PPG Casper is signed under Travis Barker's record label.

The stutter effect, which can be achieved via plugin automation - is usually done simply by hand. I can provide many examples where it is evident, but besides the point.

I am mostly curious in what plugin or series of band passes being used to target the remaining mid-high freqs, as most artists in this genre do a basic sub-eq follow by a tonal EQ, with the first low cut being around 150-200khz.

I think it's just because it was recorded when he had a big cold and stuffy nose :guru:

I would say it's an exciter like Aphex Vintage Aural Exciter or Slate Fresh Air + a send track with an EQed delay on those specific, sibilant frequencies, obviosuly a de-esser and if it sounds too harsh you could try adding an instance of soothe2 or something like Smooth Operator (I think it does something similar to what soothe2 does)

That is. Phat FX is my guess. It does almost everything listed above. And you know it will have some De-Essing later in the chain, certainly.
