Any recommendations for VSTs that (accurately) emulate hardware synths?

The simpler the synth being emulated the better.

I am looking to try learning synth programming without having to spend a fortune on an actual physical synth without knowing if I'm going to like it or not.

Diva is good all rounder, you got different emulations, enough of controls without feeling ultimately limited, but still not overwhelmed, on long run learning Diva could possible replace dozen of synths and there's always amazing selection of 3rd party presets to get you inspired.

Sure, there are dedicated little emulations from TAL, different Moogs and all that, then Usual Suspects stuff, dunno, whatever makes most sense to you, all I can say that Diva is the synth I'm using all these years, it covers lot of ground, it's fun to work with and learn on it.

I know you emphasized "accurately", and this is just a huge list of everything, but honestly, I'd take a poke through this thread anyways as there's some good info there:

    https://audiosex.pro/threads/list-of-vstis-emulating-specific-hardware-synths.29180/

What I used to do is narrow things down to synths that artists I'm inspired by use, and then focus on those and check multiple out, check comments about them, etc.

But I also like @Melodic Reality 's response, because you can really make Diva sound like just about anything. And I like to focus more on sound design, or even just on finding stuff in diva that fits a vibe/sound I'm going for, plus has characteristics of analog. At the end of the day, if I'm checking off all the boxes that make it sound like an Ob-X (for example), I don't think many people will be able to differentiate between an actual Ob-X, or Gforce Ob-X, or Diva, with the right amount of FX. Diva isn't cheap though, and the interface isn't as simple as most, so it might not suit your needs.

I think there's even a list of free plugs that emulate hardware too on the forum somewhere.

What's your budget? Is there a specific sound/genre you're aiming for?
