nothing to do with the topic but just collecting some data (lol, haha), are you using topdown mixing workflow ? if yes, how do you set your mixbus comp ? in stereo or dual mono, or depends on the music ?

Well, I've no clue what most people are knowing or why they 'need' glue, but it's a matter of sound. It's not a matter of loudness (apart from @MrLyannMusic's case [IMG]), it just results in a different sound whether you compress individual instruments or several together in a bus.

If you are using Wiess then you, already have what you need. From mild to heavily compressed with control, focus & accuracy.
The SSL bus compressor is known for a particular mildly aggressive cohesive tone. If you don't want to hear the compressor working as much, try a limiter set to -1 & -1.

Oh, I forgot two things. Pulsar Mu responds with a higher compression ratio if you turn up the input instead of lowering the threshold and myabe PA's Neold compressor (not Big Al) could be an option.
Both add different saturation and a bit of equing.

    SSL Native Bus
    Kazrog True Dynamics
Elysia Alpha Master (for MS, nothing on the side)

  7. I'd made an edit asking if you were mastering a track would you advise a "glue" VST on the master out? By which I mean would you want to master the track with as little final processing from the client? In other words you wouldn't want the mix to have an attempt at mastering by the artist.

I think this is the other way around. From the manual pg.16:
Note : the compression ratio also depends on this setting. The lower the Threshold, the higher the ratio.

I like to use reverb as "a glue" in so far as a way to impart commonality to the many tracks funnled to the master buss. A little dab'll do ya.

If you're using Ableton, the stock "Glue Compressor" (by Cytomic, incidentally) is purpose built for this and makes for a mighty fine starting point.

No, I'm old school. A mix shouldn't have anything in the main out when rendered (for fun and listening purposes it's ok).
Bus processing is for subgroups only, IMHO.

You think wrong, young friend, because the manual is wrong. With input at 0 the ratio does not go higher than 2:1 even with threshold set to Min.
If you increase the input the ratio is immediately something like 20:1.

I use different ones for different type of tracks but one of my allround favorites right now is SPL Iron. For the standard SSL type bus comp I have used Slate Grey for so long that it's just the one I automatically go for when a G-type comp is needed. ELI Arousor is also very good, it doesn't only work great for coloring but with saturation and input dialed down it's also a great allround comp!

I've been using SSL type mix buss comps for a long time, lately I've been trying the Pulsar Mu and I really like it - a very different, more organic sound that allows for quite a lot of gain reduction without "hearing" the compression.
