Did you all know that Axl Rose actually played the orchestral parts on a synth string machine? I grew up thinking it was actually a real orchestra, I just recently found this out. This has to be the best composed popular rock song of all time, the musicianship is freaking amazing, from Slash's probably the best lead guitar solo of all time to Axl actually playing the piano.

Do any of you know what synth he used back in the 80s to make this song?

I've heard that Axl is a real asshole lol, but the band is really talented for sure.

2022 version .. anyway judging from the year I would probably guess the orchestra sounds came from Roland keys, mostly used in POP song like this.

This guys tried to recompose it ..

 

for a popular mainstream song I'd say so, him, Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen etc. are up there. Now if we talking just playablity Steve Vai, Jeff Beck or like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carlos Santana, Duane Alman or Prince.

I really liked Jeff Healy and to be blind that dude fucking rocked!

Wouldn't say the best, but it's up there. Slash solos were definitely damn good, that's a fact. Both technically and musically.

I'm a big metal but also hard-rock fan and I remember a lot of people headbanging with that "stink face" for the first time with that glorious end.
Hell, I even went to see them live. Biggest gig I've ever gone hands down. That was exhausting man. But worth it. Good times. Terminator included

I think that Axl being a piano player was already well known at the time. Nice data about the synth, didn't know. Makes sense, especially since I learned about strings synths.

 

You seen the whole video? He redid the enire song playing every instrument and even tabbing it out. Tyler Rosen kids crazy gifted.

Axl wasn't really a piano player per say, or "they" say he could only play November Rain lol. People who were close to him say that he'd go in a public place, and he'd get on the piano and people were requesting him to play this and that and they said he didn't know any notes just how to play November Rain because he composed it. I don't know how true that is though.

The song was released in 1991, so it could be anything including the famous Akai S1000 sampler that soo many studios used at the time.

 

I was like 7 when this come out lol, I always loved the video though it was sad. There a picure above of him with a lot of synths but I don't know what each of them are.

 

In front of him is a Roland A-50 76 keys masterkeyboard and on top of the flight case a Yamaha DX7. To the side is a Sequential Circuits Prophet 5 and behind him is an Oberheim OB-X on top, but I can't recognize what's underneath it.
