I got a great deal on Gig Performer 4 from Plugin Alliance and I would like to build an effects/amp/cab/reverb chain for jamming and recording. I've used most of the one-stop packages like Amplitube, Guitar Rig etc but thought I might be able to make something more 'individual' from separate plugs. I'm not a metal guitarist, more blues rock and indie. Wondering what standalone plugs would fit together into a good rig, and where best to place each type? Also a bit of advice on how to use IR's to get the best live room sound in a small dry room. I have a Fender Classic Player 60's strat going in to a Steinberg UR24C, outputting to Adam A5X monitors.

My favorite amp sims are the Neural DSP ones. They are probably the closest you will get to the feeling of playing through a real amp, but it's such a individual topic so I can't say what you are going to prefer. Archetype Cory wong is great for blues, rock and indie (Fender and Dumble amps) if you want to try some of their plug-ins out. The pedal section is also supremely good!

If you really want to create your own chain with a amp plug-in that doesn't include effects or cab section I don't really have a good suggestion for you. Low gain amps like Fender, Matchless, Dr. Z etc. are probably the hardest amps to model, and there aren't really that many out there. You can of course use Neural DSP, Softube, Amplitube or whatever inside of Gig Performer but use your own pedal plug-ins before and after.

Most amp sims have IR loaders built into them so you can use your own IRs. I can recommend checking out York Audio, Ownhammer and Valhallir for some different flavours of IRs. They all have a good amount of packs that are perfect for blues and indie rock.

    Good luck!

Edit: If you are looking for Marshall Plexi type of tones both Softube, Scuffham S-gear, ML Sound Lab and Nembrini Audio has their own versions. Nembrini and Softube also has their own recreations of the Vox AC30.

    Guitar > Real Pedal/DI (optional) > Interface..
    > DI/Channel Input Simulation (optional) > Pedals (opt.) > Amp + IR > External IR (opt.) > Filters/EQ (obligatory) > Compressor (opt.) ---> Buss + Reverb Buss (opt.)

+1 to: Nembrini (Bogner/Marshall), Neural (Corey Wong), Brainworx (Mesas), S-Gear, Amplitube 4..

Agree with both posters above me. IMHO Lepou Hybrit, even though it's free, its my ampsim of choice for Marshall vibe. Good luck :)
