It’s generally untainted young minds that bring change & innovation to Art, not much else.

We can hear the effect of that if we briefly analyze the past five decades of popular music from the 20th century.


I think it’s reasonable to assume that the songs written in the first half of the 20th century were composed mostly by adults, who would probably score several piano parts, substituting all the various individual instrument riffs, strings, brass etc, by playing them first, probably, usually perhaps, never truly hearing the finished work until it is performed and then, with no production or a recording, the composers magnum opus will be at the mercy of the musicianship involved.


The 50’s brought a sea of change, the guitar was thrust front of stage, replacing the trumpet and Rock n Roll was delivered, primarily, at first, by young adults, to be administered to the 60’$ youth, who would eventually, rightly, ignore tired ol’ Rock clichés, while nurturing, adapting and melding them into their own genre and at the expense of older, more experienced folk, as is there discerning right.

No harm is done though, the youth forge their own brand of music for their generation, while adult bands are rapidly stagnating, but still retaining most of the other like–minded adult fans who will share that same narrow-minded illogical opinion that, they know better, ol’ fogies in fact.

No scoring here then, plus you could instantly hear the result of all the instruments playing together as you write, must have been an amazing revelation to all, except the ol’ score writers, who no doubt frowned upon such different innovative behavior.

I can almost hear my imaginary early 20th century composer whining, “That’s not proper music, notated by proper educated scoring musicians, they just make it up as they go along.’

Well, so did my imaginary scoring composer, but being bogged down in his foolhardy ways, progress is his sworn enemy, and must be avoided at all costs, a luddite, so he can’t see the wood for the trees.


The 70’s retained the guitar as main weapon of choice for untrained uncouth yoof, who also, 'made it up as they went along,’ listening intently ‘til they hit the right chord, they didn’t know the rules but somehow, naturally, managed to rigidly stick like glue to them, simply by following their own uninformed instincts.

No knowledge needed, just a willing open minded curiosity and an instinctive belief in your own ability to forge a decent song.

That’s still true to this day.

Then, as those young ‘uns aged a little, they too became, as is the norm, set in their own tired old ways, gradually becoming less adaptable, playing it safe, unwilling to change or even listen to reason or common sense, young fogies in fact.


The 80’s youth rebelled against this complacency by developing their own genre of music by letting Synthesizers dominate a song, no guitars, or were pushed to the sidelines.

The 80’s was also a time when production took center stage as songs became independent of the basic, vocal, bass, guitar & drums productions. Synths and digital drum boxes offered a far greater variety of sounds and this needed addressing, even with double the amount of recording channels, the results were not always pleasing though, as producers often tried to improve, impress, conceal or compensate.

Simultaneously, while these young synth bands were hogging da charts, there was also a huge youthful, radically innovative, underground dance scene, also using synths, but with more powerful analogue drum boxes, that bestows a sonic leg up to all dance genres, kicks that really kick, snappy, crispy snares that can cut thru a busy mix, yet for well over a decade the public were out of step with that and dance music was scorned upon, rarely entering the top twenty, yet Dance music, rightly so, now rules the airwaves and everything in between.


This has remained true to this day.


“Out With the Old, In With the New’ is always a sensible philosophy for youth to adhere to, as it secures change, which is vital to prevent stagnation, so progress can organically forge ahead unhinderd into uncharted territories.


The young will eventually need to remember that you’re ‘never too old to learn’ the old need to leave the past where it is and passionately embrace the present to gain access to and expand into the future, ball’s in your court, choice is yours, choose wisely.

Only young once, never too old to learn eh.

Chuck Berry is more or less correctly labelled as the father or grandfather of rock n roll, not least because he'd adapted his piano player's style to the guitar and made it his own, but it was a black (and queer) woman, Sister Rosetta Tharpe who birthed it first.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe's 1945 hit “Strange Things Happening Every Day” is considered to be the first rock and roll record.

I'm noticing a change of style in the way that foster is writing, it's becoming more aggressive, perhaps as a result of their nagging realisation that nobody here is taking the bait and only receives mocking responses.

They are also revealing their country of origin to me due to losing their previous formal language control and using specific identifying colloquialisms as a result of their anger.
