    Hello Guys

I was wondering if I can skip buying the VGA and get by with the GPU on the i7 (whether the 11700k or 12700k )
I don't play games, just music and 3D max Vray, PS, Illustrator etc

will I need more PSU power or more cooling ?
    will it give same performance?

thank you for any info you provide

    PSU calculator
Please enter all the system components that you use or plan to use in your system in the fields below.
To calculate the correct wattage of the power supply we use the peak power consumption of each component in your configuration according to the manufacturer's information.

You can save your configuration and load it anytime if needed.

If you don't play games you will be fine with the CPU graphics only. Without the GPU you will also use about 100-200 watts less power.

If you were just doing MUSIC (and the photo stuff), then definitely, on board graphics would suffice. But you've complicated things by adding 3DS Max in there... that's pretty heavy on video unless you like waiting a long time for things to render (and even then, you're going to be limited). I'm a little out of touch with how good the new cpu's video is, but I'd guess it would really crawl for 3DS Max and then I assume you wouldn't have ray tracing capability. I'm not an expert on this, but I'd be surprised if 3DS Max would work well on built-in video .

The other stuff (Music, Photoshop, Illustrator) would be no big deal though... video rendering is similar to gaming though, as far as system requirements.

Here's the system requirements for V-Ray for 3DS Max.

Hello @Yellow Raven is this the most up-to-date list, without the graphics card?
Better buy a larger power supply if you buy a graphics card. 750 W is O.K!

Yeah I was afraid it would be so. 3d max, autocad, Revit Vray and rendering is how I make my living so I guess i'd better get that covered.

I am looking into the PSU but yes it will be minimum 750W but maybe Gold Efficiency
frankly it's giving me a head-ache the stuff I need to change is pushing me out of budget so I am taking my time

For Music only, integrated GPU will do, but for 3DS Max and the rest, you will pretty much need to buy the GPU.

The right processor für 3ds max
Single threading applications such as Autodesk 3ds Max develop their full potential with the highest possible processor clock speed. For simple modelling and animation, we recommend a high-frequency Intel Xeon 6-core or 8-core E- or W-series processor with at least 3.5 GHz. For rendering, Autodesk 3ds Max uses a CPU-based rendering engine.

A high number of CPU cores is required to process the rendering processes quickly and smoothly. For complex projects and demanding 3D renderings, we can recommend the following processors depending on your budget: Intel Core i7 9700 with 8 cores, 16 threads and 4.70 GHz Intel Core i9 10900x with 10 cores, 20 threads and max. 4.5GHz, optionally a special rendering workstation with dual Xeon processors of the Intel Xeon Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum series. In our MediaWiki we explain in detail the differences between Intel Xeon and Intel Core processors. More than a real alternative are AMD processors, for example an AMD Ryzen ThreadRipper of the Pro Series 3955WX.

The optimal graphics card for 3ds max
To be able to optimally display scenes in motion in Autodesk 3ds Max, you need a performance-optimised graphics card. If you use 2-4 GB drawings, image jerks can occur due to the blockwise input/output operations between the hard disk and the graphics card memory as soon as the graphics card memory is fully utilised.

We recommend an NVIDIA RTX4000 as a starter, an NVIDIA Quadro RTX5000 with 16GB DDR6 VRAM for high-performance workflows, alternatively an NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3070. For the high-end workstation we recommend an NVIDIA Quadro RTX6000, NVIDIA Geforce 3080 or an NVIDIA Geforce 3090. AMD supports 3ds max with the AMD Radeon ProRenderer. AMD has good alternatives ready with the Radeon RX6800TX and Radeon 6900TX. Look out for driver support and AutoDesk 3ds Max certifications.

There are only 2 manufacturers of CPUs Intel and AMD. AMD has always been cheaper than Intel. The Ryzen series from AMD is the processor that is a serious competitor to Intel. It is not an experiment and a risk, but a processor that you can install without hesitation. GigaByte Mainboard is a reliable, innovative brand. Asus motherboards would be an alternative.

I collaborate with guys that work on ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, Artlantis and 3DS MAX. They pick Ryzen processors and AMD graphics and state that's the best deal for invested money.

I worked only with nVIDIA and Intel and have been a happy customer.

    I think that this is a good deal for a PSU -> be quiet! Straight Power 11 750W ATX 2.4 (BN283) €112,90

@Yellow Raven I'm in a somewhat similar boat, I already bought the 12700k and now contemplating screen monitors and either sticking with the UHD-770 or going with a RTX3050-3090.. wondering what you ended up doing and hows it going for you?

    Hey there.
I ended up with an RTX3070 it is great so far especially in 3Dmax and Vray, in music I don't think it makes much diffrence.
as for the screens I still haven't bought anything yet, the choice here is limited and I don't want to buy something I will regret later.
on advice though, if you're working in music and need Kontakt, make a budget for those SSDs. those new kontakt libraries are huge especially the orchestral ones.
I hope this was of any help.
    cheers

Glad to hear it is working well for you! I am considering entry level high-end monitors first to try the UHD-770 card with it and then if it isnt up to task I will buy one of the top GTX or mid to upper tier RTX cards to make everything nice and pretty

I used to be a heavy kontakt user but not any more. Ive grown tired of mega tb libraries and especially kontakts workflow. plus I am mad at ni for not updating their drivers to win11 yet with no customer support or word on when or if they ever plan on it. whatever. I prefer to try making pretty much everything from scratch using hardware synths, raw waves and real instruments, but if it doesnt work out of course I go back to the old way. that said yeah im gonna get a fat pcie 5 ssd when theyre out and fair priced. I'll try to remember to come back here after I get a monitor to share and compare notes etc

As you've already read, its pretty much a no-brainer. The RTX card for Vray & 3D Studio Max. Theirs no comparison at all. II just currently built a machine with an RTX 3080 in it for blender, and it is like night and day using the card vs the CPU for rendering acceleration.

Yep! i have a 5700G by AMD, works fine with Ableton 11.

But if you do 3D Studio Max and Vray, inbuild graphics will just bleed. So good external graphics card will be a must!
