I know VCV Rack uses GPU someway, somehow. Other than graphics processing of course. That much I know.

I also know the human body produces a lot of different kinds of fluids, someway, somehow. Maybe the two are related?

the big problem is that everything is routed through the the CPU first and then to the GPU, if this is removed, GPUs will be much faster and also DSP-code could maybe benefit from that? We have to wait for that.

Also GPU prices are falling slowly, hopefully more in the future - thanks covid for those prices ...

I dont think we need big players here on board (i dont even know - which big players we are talking here?!)

I have to agree that it tried so many times, to involve the GPU into the DSProcessing and this always felt short, since DSP code was very hard to adapt and made run on the GPU front end. But maybe this time its making progress? We will see ...

Far from revolutionary, as they were quite successful with this via CUDA and OpenCL frameworks for more than a decade ago.

    For example Acustica's Nebula

GPU Impulse Reverb VST is an effect plugin that calculates convolution reverbs by using your graphics card as DSP for realtime reverb calculation with a CPU usage of near 0%. Any consumer graphics card that supports OpenCL (NVIDIA / ATI or others) can be used without any need for other specific hardware. All common VST hosts are supported, such as Cubase, Nuendo, Reaper, Fruity Loops and others.

I really like this idea.I see a world where some day we'll all have new options & features in our VST & VSTi plugins.
Think about it a GPU on a computer isn't really being pushed to it's limits during audio production. It's only when I fire my PhotoShop, Premiere or a video game which I've stopped playing on my computer.
I welcome it & look forward to it.

the question is can we also use other graphics cards than nvidia ones?
Is it possible to run all kinds of DSP-codes on a GPU?

Convolution reverbs seems to be the easiest ones, Nebula is also IR based, so in fact somewhat close similar to Convoluton reverbs.

I believe you can @ArticStorm, since the GIR works with ATI as well as long as it supports OpenCL

Well, the problem is real-time code, not DSP-code. And I don't think they're gonna sacrifice 1 FPS in gaming to make latency slower in aiding the CPU.
It'd be easier to add a sound chip (chiplet, accelerator or whatever's called this month) inside the main CPU, just like Apple did with the M1. Or perhaps in the sound card/interface. Well, in fact every smartphone has a sound chip, even Android's.

That's the main idea of the SOUL language by Jules Storer, Tracktion and JUCE creator.

Not yet, they've said AMD compatibility will come with the paid version later. As for intel support *shrug*

    This might be the opposite:

If they are able to propose a good wrapper (meaning stable and not buggy as hell) that sits between the DAW and the vst plugins (instruments or effects), a lot if not all of the software developers would jump in.

This would be especially useful for some companies like u-he: Can you imagine being able to run 20+ instances of their synths without having to render to audio?

Look what NI did with their Komplete Kontrol standard, to the point that even some sample libs companies also adopted it.

Exactly, specialised hardware for specialised purposes, and it wouldn't be limited to people who only make and mix music. It can also be used for Dolby "enhancement" effects and what not. Single core improvements are already diminishing.
