You have fallen victim to the marketing babble! Let me clarify: the only difference is between exciters and saturators, because they technically do different thing.

That aside, whether we talk about tape saturation, tube saturation, preamp saturation or transformer saturation - they are all ultimately waveshapers. Tape saturation uses softer shapes (transfer curve) than for example transformer, which is almost hard-clipping. Tube is in between the two. All these types of saturation can pretty much be emulated with any clipper that allows you full control of the waveshape. Granted, some of the tape / tube / transformer blabla saturation effects have a few additional tricks under the sleeve to make the waveshaping more dynamic, less static, as in the analog world. And tape plugins often have additional parameters like Wow & Flutter or different tape formulas (basically different pre-EQs), but 90% of the sound they do boils down to the use of waveshaping.

 

Correct. All saturation plugins are soft clippers. Mostly they use cubic curves like tanh, s-tanh, fast-tanh curves or something in between, with or without an offset, depending on whether odd or even harmonics should be featured.
