My goto arpeggiator is RandARP. Free, simple to use, and as the name implies, has some randomization to it. I like this a LOT.

For sequencer, Audiomodern Riffer or HY-RPE2

So what's the best way of capturing the arp output from a plugin synth now, then?

I might be misunderstanding what you mean, but why wouldn't you just record MIDI output in your DAW? Or are you talking about capturing the output of a synth that is straight audio (and then converting it to MIDI), and not actual MIDI data?

Looks good. Wish we had something similar for Ableton...

Quite a few synth vsts seq/arp don't have Midi out sadly... u-he to start with, I insisted on KVR, they're not able to implement it so far.

Kirnu Cream (€35/$35) and BlueArp (totally free) are by far my preferred arpeggiators/sequencers for very complex arps & sequences. And if I want to use simple vintage sequences (for Krautrock, prog-rock or Ambient music) I use the excellent free SequencAir from Full Bucket Music (who is the best freeware developer ever, period).

I was also a Kirnu Cream and BlueArp guy but then Stepic got released on Sis Site and now that's my arpeggiator/step sequencer of choice.

I think it depends on your DAW. If you're using the regular VST version in a DAW other than Ableton, there's probably no real advantage. I prefer the Max4Live version with Ableton because it lets you automate all manner of stuff in Ableton's built-in synths so easily and intuitively. If you have to start figuring out what the cc numbers are for the things you're attempting to automate, well, you can do all that with Kirnu Cream as well. Then it's just about workflow I suppose.

This thing looks absolutely brilliant. I actually bought the VST version a couple months ago only to realise yesterday through sister site there was a Max4Live/Ableton version! lol so I emailed them and they immediately swap it for me, sending the activation for the M4L instead of the VST one.

Can't wait to get some time tomorrow to try it out I still haven't used this thing, only heard great things about it.

Workflow is everything and I don't bother using plugins that are not ready to use right away without setting anything up or not optimized for Ableton use. This one seems to hit the spot.

I'm not huge on using arpeggiators, primarily because it's pretty easy to create an arpeggio in your step sequencer and if you aren't modulating aspects of your synth, they quickly sound boring to me.

But the Max4Live version of Stepic's modulation and automation features make it so easy to come up with great sounding riffs that don't get boring because of that ability to quickly modulate over varying loop lengths, so things are always shifting and developing.

I believe inside ableton and max4live you have the most advanced seting possibilities to triggering variation.sting 2022 its new, chordimyst, and a bunch of other generative midi tools that you can find on maxmsp official library many for free. But yeah scaler, ezplayer, Orb, stochas, transition, the spiral (reaktors patch)
