    Hi guys,

My 2018 mac mini 3,2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 64 on Monterey is starting to show its limits.

I have ordered a new M2 pro mac mini 10 cores which will come with Ventura.

I have a relatively heavy Logic+PT+Live setup with LOTS of plugins and vsts (90% legit), apollo X16, Avid S1 controller, OWC thunderblade (with softraid driver) lots of midi controllers, egpu, 3 monitors etc. etc.

    no leds.jpeg

All my samples and sessions are on the thunderblade but there is A LOT of stuff on my system drive.

I have been using the migration assistant with different degrees of success since mavericks, but I am told that I should do a clean install when switching to silicon.

What sort of strategy did you guys use when switching to silicon, what do you recommend? Thanks in advance.

Clean install. PIA, but if you want it done right….. Not to hijack, but I just switched from Intel Mac 2018 MBP to Bootcamp Win 11. I still love MacOS, but since the switch it’s totally brought new life my my ‘18 MBP. I swear I get better performance. Would love to try those M2s tho. Cheers!!

    Clean install.

Yes it takes longer but issues are easier to diagnose and it's not something you have to do so often that it should matter in the long run.

You can take the old Mini and enable the built in nfs server (type nfsd --help in console for parameters, don't forget about permissions) and transfer whatever you need to or use it from there at your leisure till you have everything or maybe decide to use them in tandem.

    Enjoy

Went from Intel to M1 Max - Clean install. Painful setup but do it once and be done with it. Oh and got a few of these which are remarkably cheap yet well made from amazon for putting those old USB line6 / pedals / faders over in a new USB-C hub etc. lol

Thanks for your replies and thanks for the idea for the nfs server!

I was planning onto keeping the "old" mac mini at hand for a while just to have a backup in case I need to open an older session.
And there is the problem of the "less legit" software. The only stuff I still have "unregistered" is waves and fabfilter, I dont mind buying the fabfilter stuff because I do use them a lot but I cringe at the idea of forking 250€ a year for waves just to keep compatibility with older sessions :-(

My lifetime donation at theaudioscene was a bad investment, they went bust... any ideas for a similar provider welcome
