Can anybody identify this piece of gear? It is an isolator/filter by the looks of things, the middle item can be seen clearly at 2:06

The gear in question from Paul Kalkbrenner's "Studiosession #2," visible at 2:06, appears to be an isolator or filter device. While the exact model is not explicitly identified in the search results, isolators/filters are commonly used in professional audio setups to manipulate frequencies, reduce noise, or enhance sound clarity. Paul Kalkbrenner's setups often include a mix of hardware synthesizers, mixers, and effects devices alongside software like Ableton Live.

For a precise identification, referencing high-resolution images or videos of his studio session or consulting dedicated forums like Reddit's Beatmatch community could provide more detailed insights

In Paul Kalkbrenner's Studio Session #2, you can indeed see various devices, and the one you mentioned, which appears at 2:06, could be an isolator or filter. Producers often use devices like the Elysia Xpressor or similar analog filters and isolators in their setups, which are used for mixing and sound processing.

Paul Kalkbrenner is known for his unique sound, which is characterized by the creative use of effects and production methods. Here are some details about the effects and techniques he uses:

Diverse use of audio effects: Kalkbrenner often uses a variety of effects on individual tracks. For example, a track with just one clap can have up to 20 audio effects connected in series. The original quality of the sample doesn't play a major role, as the effects significantly shape the sound.

Distortion: Distortion plays a central role in his sound design. He emphasizes that it's often not the track itself, but the track's distortion that is the loudest.

Organic sound: Kalkbrenner describes his music as organic. He achieves this through experience and the deliberate blending of sound elements into a harmonious overall picture.

Synthesizers and effects: Forums mention that soft synths like the Vanguard are suitable for similar sounds. These synthesizers offer easy operation and versatile sound design options.

I assume you're talking abou the one between the two Strymon pedals and the Roland M1NM1? If yes, sorry, no clue, never seen it before.

Looks familiar but I'm not sure. Seems to have had it as long as he's had that setup so 8 years or more. Maybe it's a custom unit to go with those filters/controller he has above the midas?

The rest is Strymons mentioned by No Avenger, the drum machine is a Acidlab Miami an analogue 808 clone, couple eventide's above that and what looks like a TC Electronic 2290-DT?? at the bottom of the shot.

I'd also be interested in finding out.

the design of it makes it look like some kind of clone certainly. it's sort of blank, the generic style you often see done. Almost like it is entirely made of plastic. No make/model obvious. The two sliders in the middle of it make me think more of some kind of drum machine instead of a filter.
