    Good Evenin'

Im currently developing hardware emulation vst plugins of 80s hi-fi equipment from my collection (cassette decks, EQs, Effects, pre-amps etc)
Im recording the raw outputs of the hardware to get the data about how the signals are processed, at different volumes and variations (10% - 20% - 30%)
    Sinewaves, vocals, drums, noise.

So my question here is if there are more ways to collect data on how the hardware processes signals, things like clipping,a way to measure the harmonics introduced when pushing volume and other useful info for accurate emulation

Photo is the hardware im using

you could play sine waves through and analyse the output.

its difficult to find documentation about specific effects of such devices.

Thats pretty much what im doing right now, i was wondering if there is a way to get more data of how the analog hardware processes the audio.

The easiest to get would probably be plugin doctor, you can use it to analyze hardware too. Other than that there's also more complex tools like True RTA which is kinda the same but closer to what real lab equipment would be like.

Then of course you can get an actual lab setup if you're really into it, that would be more appropiate for analizing the circuit at different stages rather than just the output which could help you make sense of what's going on but it also requires a lot more skill.

Signal modeling is an art in and of itself. You can get away by making simple impulse response with linear systems (EQs, delay, reverb without distortion or modulation for example), or you can use a tool like this one to extract a transfer function for waveshaping distortion : https://aspeninstruments.com/plugins/black-diamond-probe

If you want to get deeper into the subject, you will get into dynamic convolution, volterra kernels and machine learning territory. You can make your own thing from scratch or use something like https://www.neuralampmodeler.com/

Thanks! that probe vst was exactly what i needed for modeling the distortion/clipping
the actual hardware distorts and introduces harmonics in a very strange way so im trying to wrap my head on how i can emulate that properly

This is so cool. I'm in love with this plugin RN. I'm not telling about it because people tend to be rude with waveshapers (but not taking in account the fact a lot of the beloved analog emulations are, actually, waveshapers and filters stacked together). So little on the CPU as well. It's like distortion convolution. I can do pretty crazy boxes with regular IR's and this plugin, and i'm not a dev, just a music producer. Analog modeling gurus can make a mess out of this little monster.
