Lately i checked a lot of newschool hip hop mixes and this album got me.I would love to hear some more experienced engineers thoughs about the mixing on the vocals an generally the sound. What do you think makes the difference on the mixing side (of course we are talking about good gear). What eq settings do you think the engineer used?

As we all know that we can't polish a turd unless we want it glittery, it all starts with the raw vocal, the artist himself, his vocal timbre, good performance and uniqueness.

    On the technical side,
A well treated and optimal vocal booth, same old Neumann U87ai ran through a Neve or api preamp and of course, the post recording stage => mixing. The preamp might not be always an accurate guess, but the u87 has always been proven as a bread and butter among today's big names in the worldwide music industry, especially rap/pop/r&b.
Other people would shout out C12 or C800G too, as these are used for rap vocals from time to time too but not as often as u87.
People might start with arguments like "the sound lies in the mix bruh, it's a matter of how it's been mixed, bla bla bla", but guess what, there's no hardware nor plugin like tool to shape the sonic DNA that's microphone specific. You can only make a C12 to sound like a better C12 through the mixing processs, but not to simulate other microphones. That's what eq & comp and processors alike are for.
Others would say "well, if you have a C12 then you just cut some highs with an EQ and you can shape its sound to sound *exactly the same as u87*. That's so wrong, a C12 with a treble cut would only sound like a muffled C12, not like a simulated u87. Similar doesn't mean the same and also similar doesn't mean that it will have the exact same sonic magic specific to a particular microphone. You can't remove the harshness of a cheap condenser microphone, using the best preamps and eqing/deessing still won't make a Samson or a Rode NT1A sound like an U87. Even Neumann TLM103 sounds kinda harsh compared to u87, something that you still can't totally fix in the mixing stage unless you replace the source/microphone.
Also others will say that has nothing to do with the microphone, that hits can be recorded with a 500$ price range mic too. Well, that's partially true. Yes, you can make hits with a budget mic too, BUT, 1. the sonic fidelity won't ever be on par with a recording quality you can only achieve with top end equipment and 2. in order for that song to become a hit and to totally bypass its technical inferiority, it has to be TREMENDOUSLY good, amazing vocalist + amazing songwriting + amazing production.

There's no microphone, analog units, plugins nor "mixing techniques" to compensate for what makes a great song.
Great performance + great songwriting/production. Tick these 3 first and you'll conquer the world.
