I've recently stumbled upon a classic track:

What I really like are the simple, noise-ish drums. Does anyone know a vst with which I can quickly recreate noise like that?
What I'm currently fondling with is a simple noise generator and playing with the envelope and filter. I'm getting there but I keep on thinking there has to be a more elegant way...

Any hints?

Yeah, most synths have noise oscillators, amp envelopes, filters, filter envelopes, etc.

James Holden used to use Jeskola Buzz, and in Buzz there is a wonderful machine called HD (Hal Dreamer) NoiZe, which basically is an envelope follower controlling a noise generator + filter (all within one machine). Awesome little effect, which you probably could emulate easily in your DAW of choice.
Otherwise you could use a vocoder, feeding drums and noise into it as carrier and modulator.

edit: You could use side-chain gate/expander to create similar effect.

Lol! Yeah, I started with it 2000, and it just opened a door to a sonic universe. I have a lot to thank for Buzz.
It's still in "beta" , but stable as hell.
