Need help in figuring out which sample library or VST will help in getting that 70's 80's funk bass sound, which will have all those slide, hammer-on articulation. Just an example of this track, right from 0.40 this bass guitarist is singing along the vocals. Pl guide, I'm not a guitarist.

Check the big third party Kontakt developers and Trillian.
But the details will most likely be lost in any busy/heavy midrange tracks, so you need specific arrangement.

Purity Synth has some decent slap bass samples in it but nothing like what that bassist would've done on that song, he got the funk which no MIDi machine could recreate:chilling:

Try make friends with someone who could play bass for you.

^This! Or play one yourself. It's quicker (once you get the simple stuff down) and alot more fun. Thumb and Jazz Bass. :)

You could recreate anything on a DAW, i just mean having that bass going into a mixer input will sound different to a VST, I recommended what i'd try use, Purity -> bass guitar -> Slap 16.

Amplesound has the best bass emulations around, in my opinion. I'd start there.

Trillian is the combo of best and simplest bass for me.

You aren't ever going to get programmed bass to sound like the tune you posted? Presumably it's possible to do with samples, MIDI and a whole lot of time and hassle, but seriously? An excellent bass player will just do it, whereas you are going to have spend long, long hours editing stupid shit to get it to sound like that in midi?

Real guitars is one thing samplers do not do very well. I would suggest you will never get the same expression from a sample lib as you will a real guitarist - certainly not as quickly.

I believe it was Marcus Miller who played bass on that track. Trilian has an entire section of bass devoted in depth to Marcus Miller's style of play.

Sorry Baxter. When I answered this question I hadn't looked down at the other answers yet.

Here is something I put together for you using Trillian:-

I may have added too much low end to the bass though.

I would grab my trusty Fender Jazz. If thats no option amplesound for example has some nice Bass VSTis. Play it with a keybaord and edit it.

And yes its played by Marcus Miller - A Bass god. Hard to achieve such an outstanding quality played bass.
