Do you know a quality freeware plugin that allows to make a stereo signal mono below a set frequency?
I'd like to use it e.g. to make basslines mono below e.g. 180Hz

Something like the 'mono maker' in Brainworx bx_control V2

Any daw has M/S capabilities for default EQ. Just place a Side EQ on the bass track and high-pass to your pleasure.

 

Brainworx bx_solo https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/bx_solo.html or Voxengo's MSED 2 but then you'd still you'd need to route an EQ in to the M/S matrix. So the simplest way is to use any EQ plugin you have already that has Mid/Side processing then slap a steep high pass on the side just like jaxyflash said (stack or space if the cut off isn't steep enough, As in say its only got a 4 pole HPF, then put one an octave lower than your cut off frequency and then one on your cut off frequency, You'll get a much steeper result, apulSoft's apQualizr EQ is really good as it allows you to stack away until your heart is content http://apulsoft.ch/apqualizr2/ although I've not upgraded to V2 yet, So can not fully vouch for it keeping all the same features v1 has).

Otherwise for shekels Brainworx bx_control V2 is the quickest tool for the task I find but it is not freeware https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/bx_control_v2.html - If they we're to release a bx_monomaker for free to very, very cheap it'd sell/do really well.
They've recently released an dbx based subsonic synth which is very close to the real thing and offer a free version but without the sub-harmonic synth generator/just the filter section which is a very nice little tool for sorting out your kick drum and bass lines https://www.plugin-alliance.com/en/products/bx_subfilter.html

Sorry I have no solutions that haven't been mentioned already but thought I'd mention the sub harmonic filter tool as it is very useful

Actually due to not being familiar with all of them just yet, This one by AirWindows is an all-in-one side high-pass filter;

The advantage of basslane is that is mono-ize only the low end.

There's Panipulator ( Boz Digital Labs ) http://www.bozdigitallabs.com/product/panipulator/
which is the most simple to use ( but works only on pan ).

There's also Center by Waves mostly work like bassline.
