The word is companies like LG and Samsung already have 8k tvs ready, though now its still time to cash in on 4k.
And if you worry about old movie transfers to 8k, there is no problem, especially if they were shot in 35mm or 65-70mm.
65-70mm could even be easily converted to 30-40 mega pixels.

I have an AOC2868PQU 4K monitor and I couldn't go back now! It's great with lots of plugins and tracks in Ableton. It does liberate projects. I also use it with Davinci Resolve, Photoshop, After Effects etc. For anything creative screen space is really helpful.

The only problem I have is sometimes I have problems reading stuff because things can get a little tiny! (I have the zoom in and out thing activated in OSX and that helps a little).

Oh and I nearly forgot to mention ... THE GRAPHICS CARD!
Of course for your nice expensive monitor you will need a nice expensive graphics card and for an 8K one that's gotta cost. Just a touch! Ouch!!!

I've been working on a 5K for a while now but that's strictly for graphic work. Granted, it's a loaner from my contractor and not as sexy looking. It is a DELL though. I'm curious to see the difference in resolution.
For anyone wondering, 5K is an absolutely necessity to be able to see 4K images at full size and still have space to see toolbars and panels.

Nice. I can disable all scrollbars now.
Bummer only that my graphics card now eats more RAM than my DAW...
