So I want to get TC Konnekt 6 instead of my scarlet 2i2. Now I have one of those desktops with very little room to manouver upgrade wise. It has no firewire, so I need to get one of those firewire pcie cards. I was gonna get one of those generic cheap ones that you would get on amazon when you search for firewire card. But reading some reviews I kinda gort the impression that they are not really suitable for audio interfaces. The people who complained obviously had problems with their particular setup, but I kinda got the general conclusion. I found out that cards being recomended for audio interfaces are the x16 ones. I only had one such free slot and its occupied with my graphics card.
So my question is this: should I forget about firewire for this purpose if I dont have a free x16 pcie slot? Or does anyone have any suggestion?

x16 ist total overkill for fw .. id take care of the chipset, texas instruments is more compatible with audio interfaces and the better choice. single lane pcie is more than sufficent. hostside best use the 4pin fw socket as its unpowered and you dont risk toasting your expensive gear with cheapo designed fw cards, that might wreck it by chance.

a couple of reasons. firstly, tc konnekt has very nice da converters, but also the fact that it is firewire i m hoping will make a bit of difference.
secondly, my 'free' pcie slot currently houses the ethernet/wireless thingy. So getting rid of internet will definitely improve my workflow

i couldnt find a single one that is not x1 ... :) maybe on earth 2 x16 is what x1 is here - x16 are usually server grade sas/sataIII raid controllers, workstation gpu cards or pcie splitter/extender

Ok maybe Im saying it wrong but take a look at this link

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_0_14?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=firewire%20texas%20instruments&sprefix=firewire+texas%2Caps%2C147&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Afirewire%20texas%20instruments

So for me, the second one is x1, the rest are all x16. At any rate its only this second one that would fit into my free slot. The other one is occupied by my graphics card

where you read the x16? read the product titles once again and slow and tell the difference on your own please. you should have basic knowledge on PCI(e) before buying or installing.

doesnt fit the small pcie slot. knowledge of size comparison sufficient for sticking something in, imo

Look up these numbers as Im going off the top of my head.

Bandwidth of conventional PCI is about 1 gb more or less
The Firewire what konnekt uses is also known as 1394a, Bandwidth is 400 MBS

What I'm trying to tell you is I also have a Konnekt 6 and all I did is get on ebay and looked for a PCI card that was recommended. I got the old via one.

I picked one up for 5 bucks with free shipping.

I run at 128 with no problems

I dont think he does, some people who are not experts sometimes forget to say the e at the end. He is clearly talking about 1gb transfer rate while the PCI

Somewhere on the TC konnekt site it tells you what cards are recommended and this is one of them.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/281196940930?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

I bought this and it works perfectly. it is PCI with no E.
My guess is in 1993 the bus speeds are slower than todays computers??? Hell I dont know, Im just trying to help out. I know that card works.

    Found this on TC Electronics

"We do not recommend any specific models, since manufacturers and specifications vary from country to country.
To get the best results get a Texas Instruments or a VIA VT6306 based firewire card."

NOW look up Pcie vs Pci Firewire card in google

    Hope this helps you

What they said on TC website... and if you can find a firewire card with the 12V power plug that could be even better.

Something like this TI chipset firewire card: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lycom-pe-107-pci-e-2-port-firewire-800-%281394b%29-and-1-port-firewire-400-%281394a%29-card

It's a PCI-e 1x card not PCI even though it doesn't matter so much since PCI has more than enough bandwidth for audio/firewire. Buy the one that seems more convenient, yes.

don_questo Please, once you'll have solve the pci question, could you come back and tell if you really feel an improvement for your musical workflow?
By the way, what for do you use your sound card? Are you more likely to record audio or more into the midi composition?
