I would guess the Intellectual Property would be a large part of why they would buy them out. Can't Fender manufacture pretty much anything themselves?

The difference in that instance was Autodesk bought a competing product, which is sometimes done to basically acquire their IP, other times to remove a competitor (and in the Autodesk case, the latter), but Fender don’t have a stake in that so don’t think it’s to put it into obsolescence. The fact is, Fender dont have the brand image they had, hence a recent revamp of their product line, people aren’t buying guitars the same and there is a LOT more competition out there. So maybe they are looking at this whole DAW and interface malarkey and thinking they want a piece. I remember The Pirate saying the Presonus support for Studio One was bad (memberships to subscriptions cancelled), which surprised me given the fact most users I see around these parts love it, so it’s clearly got a strong user base, plus the interfaces are excellent and cover a very wide range in terms of quality, same as their StudioLive desks. As a company to acquire it makes sense. It’s what they do with it that is the issue (Gibson seem to have been clutching at survival for a long time, tried to diversify by acquisition which was a possible cause of their bankruptcy). I hope it’s a chance for cash injection to Presonus, growth for Fender, because that pushes existing DAW and interface devs to improve, and that’s good for consumers.

btw, yes, I am aware that is a very idealistic view!

As a Cubase user, I hope not. Cubase has made huge strides in recent hours to get it back to where it once was, and I think that is partial down to the way Studio One has been set up as a real alternative to it (meaning the amount of integrated plugins, instruments etc) and if I did use Cubase I would definitely be an S1 user. Competition keeps devs on their toes and stops them getting lazy **coughs**avid**

actually **coughs** AUTODESK!!!** You think ProTools annual updates are bad?? Look at the shite they try and pass as “New Features” on anything that isn’t for 3D entertainment content creation!

the more alarming trend is of corporate mergers, monopolies, and subscription based "services". I got a feeling standalone digital multitracks might start becoming more popular. Pretty soon there will be one company with one knob for the only DAW available and you'll need your monthly booster shot and digital chip passport to sign in. And the only drink will be Brando.

It is a merger not an acquisition. It is going to be the same as the Focusrite-Sequential merger. Both companies Presonus and Fender will operate as two seperate companies but under one owner

as we keep reaping the wonderful fruits of "free market" its hard to play naive and hope for anything good to come out of this.

sure, it COULD happen but, the overall trend is build a brand, make your million and then sell. the buyer could be after maybe just "trim it" and sell it, or suck the life out of it for a short period butcher it, sell parts of it in speculation, or experiment with the existing client base and see how much they can take and when it bursts, over to next

presonus was already f%king it up with their "sphere", wouldn't surprise me if subscription is on the doorstep

see, if I was brand new coming into this, for what, £14 a month / £149 a year you get a full set of tools, sounds, samples & plugins etc.. to get you going and creating, it’s a no brainer. Compare that to the likes of Cubase Pro (which I would say offers a similar feature set, similar amount of included sounds and plugins) which is £499 in one hit, then probably £100 a year to get the latest version. I know you can generally get “bundles”, but realistically you can get a Presonus bundle with basically all you need apart from a midi keyboard for half the price of Cubase Pro, and the quality of stuff is much better than it was 10 years ago.

I get it if people already own their own plugins or instruments and just want the DAW, and in that case, yes, there is definitely the argument against, but i really do see the pluses of the Sphere, and if Steiny did something where they had an all in sub (including all their instruments like Iconica, all the Groove Agent kits) for say £50 a month, then for sure I would go for it.
