Sounds like you are using warp markers to get yourself on beat and running out of breath too often and then rapping through your nose cause you chest is now hollow.

Not going to download that big file to confirm, I might be wrong, but it probably sounds too nasally and off. Technique matters. Not saying this to put you down. I am saying what am saying because it is fixable and it's easier to fix with a little work, than chasing magic sauce dragons and killer tricks. GIGBO.

Beasties and DJ Hurricane cut up a lot of tracks but they had the lungs to spit clearly, plus as much as you want to identify subject matter matters and so does headspace. Work on you and first technique. Also, if you are pissed be honest about what you are actually pissed about especially with yourself. Not judging you bro, but when it's hollow it comes out that way, especially in this kind of music.

The RTM and Beastie vibe comes from wanting to fuck off, party and move a world stuck in the past forward not back to 1901. It might sell, I never got Jesus rock either but people seem to dig it.

    Good Luck.

I'm going to use this as an example of what not to post in this thread and remind everybody what this forum is labelled, what questions I asked, and what sort of help I am seeking.

Seriously, for every helpful reply I get, there's always someone else who wants to comment on song composition, performance, whether it's milk before cereal, whether I named my dog correctly, whatever.

If you are a mixing engineer, hired to mix, and you said something like this to my artist, I would have serious problems with your professionalism.

You asked for feedback, the best thing you can do is improve the performance. It's also the easiest and fastest fix because sonically there isn't anything wrong with rest of it.

That's what is going to make the biggest difference. Take it for what it is, your song is fixable. I am not telling you not make it, I am just telling you it needs work and how to fix it. I am not even telling you to change subject matter, am telling you to make it clearer. That dog whistle crap is always going to come across as weak. Be you without ducking first, that's respectable even if I don't agree with out.

What you do from then on, is on you. The rest as you say, favors that free speech, you say what you want and I say what I want. The fact that am engaging you and trying to help you out should be an illumination that even if I don't agree and I at least am telling you how to say what you want even if I don't agree with it. You didn't ask for a reach around, you asked for feedback on your mix and a sub-optimal element isn't going to magically get gooder.

Like I said before, good luck and peace out.

@JMOUTTON I think Jonathan is not planning on getting a rap superstar. It's his first album and all of them (the first albums) have to be ORIGINAL. From a certain point of view it is impossible to disagree with you BUT...

Listen to many first albums (Prefab Sprout or Coldplay, The Police, The Rolling Stones; etc etc), what they seek is not beeing the best vocalist student or the winner of america's got talent, they only want to express themselves as they are, not as others are. They don't have any technique and play and sing very badly.

Who cares if J doesnt know how to breathe???? Have you heard the song? I think it's very good for a first album and Jonathan has all the time to meet gurus and coaches and end up making clean shit like everyone.
Don't forget this music is "underground", it's not even mainstream rap, I've heard so many underground albums sound so bad and it doesnt prevent me from listening to them and I prefer them to Bruno Mars (he's a pro isnt he)

Of course everything can be better and, again, you re partially right, but it's like you were saying to Picasso or Van Gogh that they don't know how to draw and should go back to school. That's complete nonsense...

So just let artists live, and NO, technique doesnt really matter, the only important thing is talent, something that can't be learnt. Technique comes with learning or experience and often results in killing talent. (not always, of course, but not everyone can become Michael Jackson)
