    They would probably check the referral [link] and they would be able to tell... (As long as they have a clue that the first visit came from the plug-in)

    Some virus makers also use this tactic to make victims pay to unlock their computer or pay the "fine" for viewing some content. That says something... But I guess you also can't say it's totally unfair.

    But, yeah, it's more of a scare tactic and not something they would likely pursue (well, they could always "make an example"; which I very much doubt in such a case).
