In principle, you are right about the rich. Children of rich parents could sometimes afford these things thanks to mom and dad. There were also rich parents who told their children, if you want to afford that, you have to deliver newspapers or go on holiday.

And please stick to the topic “Favorite DAW and why?”, everything else is off-topic and against the rules!

No matey, not at all. Worked my ass off 14 hour days and nights hehe. I just got lucky on certain occasions and landed high pay jobs and gigs. Anyway, it wasn't up until i was nearly 30 when my late mom's business took off and my parents starting living more comfortably. But by then (1996), i had already my own life and job.
Oh and because you asked to hear something on a previous reply. This is me in '94. No computer involved in this one, i did record it stereo from console mix to a Marantz CDR-1 cd recorder i had. Released only on 300 copies bootleg 12" because it's essentially a bootleg remix. Started as an original with just a few samples (that's part 1), but then the bass was so "on the money" with the original main verse and chorus that i indulged myself on bootlegging the whole thing lol. But i think you might be able to notice a certain style that became much hipper some years later on. If not np mate, blame me hehe.
    Cheers

Fun fact: The siren sound coming in at around 3:00, is me scratching the vocal on the acapella record i had and adding a Roland SDE-3000 delay i had from the 80s. It can be audible the vocal comes from vinyl.

This YT video just popped up in my feed and your reply came to mind.

So the video is from 1990 and the guy is using an Atari ST, look how primitive the DAW looks compared to today, no audio tracks, no VSTs, just pure midi data relying on mutitimbral keyboards or sound modules.

This is how it was and looked back in the day, and this is how we got it done.

Absolute fantastic and exciting time back then but, we are so lucky with what we have today and all the advances that have been made since this time.

It's great that you are a satisfied FL user. The other manufacturers of DAWs are not crying, but are working and making their product available for purchase to the worldwide community of musicians. Everyone is free to buy what they want. Thank God there is no obligation to buy this or that DAW.

EDIT: @Shasha, would you continue to use FL Studio if FL Studio suddenly charged €80 for an update?

FL Studio has the right smart business model to attract customers in the lower price segment. (...Lifetime updates for free) !

Find the workflow that makes sense to you, because it only comes down to workflow!

FL studio since like 2007 or so for me. Tried Cubase, Cakewalk Sonar, of course stuff like audacity (lol).

FL is just such a production powerhouse and the workflow is too smooth and user friendly for me to go through the effort of learning another DAW with no established benefit. People try to argue against it like "but pro tools is the industry standard" or "the sonics are better in xyz DAW" or they just say FL is a toy and not a real DAW. Ultimately they must realize that in a blind A/B comparison they would not tell the difference of a finished track, it's really about workflow.

People tend to have perceptions of FL from their early days but don't realize how powerful and plugin friendly it is. No real logic behind criticizing it's capabilities. I don't care what people use, though sometimes the market feels like a cult where people are so loyal and sworn to their daw choice that they hate on other daws to support their daw choice, it's weird. I like that the market has competition and it encourages innovation, and it's awesome people have choices.

It's also awesome that FL is buy once own for life (even though I R2R that thang lol). In the NLE world, Blackmagic Davinci Resolve does that and innovates well, Adobe Premiere is losing their position as "the industry standard" yet still raise their sub fee while always having annoying bugs and issues.

I started a little bit later , but not much. maybe 1995 . On an Atari and a cracked cubase . 2 years later or so I bought Cubase . i am still using Cubase. I am not a power user , but i can work with what i need on autopilot . if I would start now I would use Reaper . I think it is great , but a little overwhelming for me . And too much work on the wrong half of my brain . I can get around in Studio One pretty well obviously and do like that , too

Yeah, that's very important! Never choose a workflow that makes it too easy to get things done!

I've been mixing professionally for the last 25+ years, worked on almost every major DAW. I have worked with many major artists in my country, won many awards, multi-platinum, platinum, gold plaques, etc. As far as strictly mixing DAW, Studio One is my choice. It offers the perfect balance of good tools, good workflow and good features designed for mixing and editing work. Can't see myself using any other DAW in foreseeable future.

As for music production DAWs - just use whatever feels right, natural and most effortless.
