For pads: I just installed Omnisphere 2 and it looks amazing? Wow. There is also some cool, neat free plugins. Let me check a second. Ok here you go: Aethereal by Psychic Modulation; Krakli's Cygnus. These two were really good when I first tried them. Of course there's all the beasts all-purpose plugins that work (Zebra, Massive, etc).

For ambience: the limit here is your imagination. Any sound + processing + render and more processing + (prob a lot of reverb) = lots of beds and drones
