Well, the problem with this question is that you didn't specify what features you want from an EQ.
Do you want an EQ that can do a little bit of everything? Should it be good at something in particular?

Without naming specific, narrowing, expectations, this thread will very soon turn into a loooong list of EQs. ;)

    EDIT:
For example, I've been working with Pro-Q3 for a while and have found that the feature set and some built-in defaults make me work harder than if I outsource certain tasks to other EQs. It's a great EQ, but it counteracts my workflow.

Now I use Sonnox Claro for my bread and butter because I can do all my static EQing in a single plugin instance and not have to switch back and forth between instances of different tracks. Oxford Dynamic EQ for dynamic filters and DDMF LP10 for specific cases where the phase of the filters is important.

#Metoo. That analogue bubblebath, warm sound of burnt cpu cycles...
Even as emulation, or approximation, or... analog always sounds better. It is non-binary.

I really appreciated your input... I wanted to use it as a general EQ, a bit of everything. I like shaping the sound. Logic pro EQ has been my go to for years but I am looking at fiddling with something new.

I have been using Logic pro and using its EQ for years. I just wanted to start fiddling with something else to see if there is something I might be missing... But I will take your level headed stance to heart.

Shade Equalizer von UVI - Der FabFilter Pro-Q Killer?

When it comes to equalizers, FabFilter's Pro-Q is something of a king, and it's exactly this throne that UVI's Shade now wants to scratch by improving work processes and making everyday tasks easier to perform. As a filter tool, Shade aims to push the boundaries of conventional EQ, filter and modulation effects. With a whopping 35 filter shapes and with 9 modulation types, a suitable foundation is already there and goes far beyond the usual arsenal of EQ's. Could Shade be the Pro-Q killer?

Kind of tangental, but this got me curious how much of a footprint different EQs might have.

For each EQ I started a new project, added a tone generator at 1 kHz and 128 instances of the EQ, each with a 1 dB peak at 500 hz / default Q. I saved the project, restarted Reaper, loaded up the project and wrote down Reaper's self-reported CPU & RAM usage numbers.

ReaEQ: 99 MB RAM, <2% CPU
DMG EQQuick: 435 MB RAM, <5% CPU
CraveEQ: 2.2 GB RAM, ~11% CPU
HoRNet Total EQ: ~23% CPU (didn't measure RAM)

Don't know if there is any eq which provides same or better quality with such low cpu usage. If cpu efficiency is not a concern, there are many great options out there.

Hell yeah. Ten times out of ten I can tell if something's mixed with digital or analog emulation. Because I'm doing the mixing.

Please do this for Pro Q3 also. Optimized plugins share GUI with all instances, ofcourse as expected nothing will beat the optimization of stock EQ unless its a very crap DAW.

Q-3 is Q-3, if you want something else, then sure check something else,

TDR Nova is Parallel EQ, that's completely different thing, Q-3 is serial EQ,
UVI (and others) use iLok shit - fuck iLok and fuck every developer who falls for it

ReEQ tries to mimic Q3 for free, but honestly it's nowhere close
Volcano 3 is Fab's attempt to address lack of character in sterile Q-3
DMG and Toneboosters are both very nice, but different,

Fabfilter are catching attention with very sleek and well though out GUI, which makes you work very fast IF you learn it - are they best sounding or fastest to learn plugins? most likely not, but who cares

I enjoyed graphical EQs for a long while, but recently I encourage myself to use my ears, not eyes - I purposedly avoid any visual EQs - TDR Slick EQ and various analog-styled plugins like Analog Obsession and Overloud Gems are fairly refreshing experience although I feel quite insecure not having things that much under control

Not an eq, but have you tried those Reese's Cups with the bits of potato chips in them? Now they're incredible, and worth checking out!

(I'm assuming we're just giving recs for stuff that isn't eq now? Am I doing it right?)

Why not! It's a good idea to break out of habits at times.
To me, the dynamic EQ bands in Pro-Q3 and FF Equalizer 4 made the biggest difference.
Boosting or cutting individual bands above or below a certain level threshold can make a huge difference in more subtle EQing without changing the overall sound character as much.
Plus it's a bit like the magic in Soothe except that you'll have to set the EQ bands manually.
